This may seem like a dumb question, but how important is it to use Eureka brand F and G bags? I want to say the brand I tend to buy most is DVC or Rubbermaid. I don't think my grandma ever bought Eureka brand bags either.

Also, does anyone have photos of vintage Eureka brand F and G bags? When did they start printing the diagram on them?

I remember someone such as Brian (eurekaprince) or Jimmy (rugsucker) mentioning something about there initially being 2 different throw-away bags - style f and style g which may have been designated for the automatic-type and super-automatic type (not sure). Anyway, they debuted with the Super Automatic S-255 in 1956 according to advertisements and later became combined as the well-known F&G style.

I'm unsure if there's a quality difference between the OEM bags and knock-offs. I have never personally seen an older throw-away Eureka bag older than the mid-1970s, which included installation images; although I'm sure someone else can post photos of them.

The photo's below include:

1) Mid-1970s OEM bag package front

2) Mid-1970s OEM package close-up of model series compatibility

3) Mid-1970s OEM package close-up of cleaner line drawings

4) Mid-1970s OEM package package back

5) 1954 ad (supposedly) featuring the Roto-Matic canister model 800 and Automatic upright model S-250A

6) 1955 ad (supposedly) featuring the Super Roto-Matic canister model 800-A and Super Automatic upright model S-255

7) 1956 ad featuring the Super Roto-Matic canister model 910 and Super Automatic upright model S-255

A closer look at the 1954 Eureka ad revealed the 3-D "All-Around Cleaning" Rug Nozzle instead of the more popular 1956 deluxe style used at least through the '80s. In addition, the new "Miracle Cleaning Tool for Shag Rugs" was featured as a clip-on option. I was unaware that shag carpeting originated earlier than the '60s!

In one of his vacuum unboxing videos, I don't remember which one, ibaisaic did a demonstration between OEM and knockoff bags for Hoover, and he ripped each one open to show that there was a lot less filtration layers to the bag, and the paper quality was more worse with the knockoff bags. More fine dust gets let through the bag and into the bag chamber and motor.

Third-Party F&G Bags...

I've only ever used third-party bags with my F&G uprights, so I can't actually compare them with OEM. A while back, I bought an F&G bag conversion kit (outer bag and 20 generic, Casa Fresh-branded filter bags for the bargain price of $25 with free shipping) to replace the dump bag on my Sanitaire S686. Even if the bags aren't fully OEM quality, they seem to work okay in all three of my F&G machines.

That said, I feel it's seldom accurate to paint third-party bags with too broad a brush, because they aren't all the same. Looking across the various brand vacuums I own, the quality can vary greatly. Some are every bit as good as OEM and others are little better than the debris that collects inside them.

The

F&G bags aren't the best bags to begin with. The sanitaire F&G name brand hepa bags are the best. I think royal A might have a hepa version.
The S&T setup is very high end bags and top 3 bags I've used.

Smart idea to convert your Eureka uprights to the ST style HEPA Cloth bags. We all know how a Eureka F&G bag setup on a Kirby destroys it's airflow and cleaning performance, so I could only imagine how much better your Eureka uprights clean better with the ST style bags. The filtration improvement is the icing on top of the cake.

As for the importance of using the genuine Eureka bags? I wouldn't worry about using a generic bag. I would be more inclined to look at the quality of the bag as my deciding factor in what to use. I have used generic Miele GN HEPA Cloth bags in my Miele canisters for years, for example without worry - and this is a brand who claims you're going to do horrible damage to your motor if you don't buy their brand bags. As long as you feel the filter paper or HEPA Cloth material used in making the bags is a decent weight and thickness, use them.

Style A

In my online browsing, I just learned that there was also a Style A - a narrower bag than the F & G - for the special model 1401-A/B/D.
