Electrolux Elite...

Hi, A friend of mine found me a red Electrolux Elite. I've been after this model for quite a while now. It's missing the attachments so I'll have to keep my eyes out for a set.

And here it is with the highier end verison that had variable power. Both came out around 1988ish.

Hello James. I think you may find it was even earlier than 1988, it could have been as early as 1986, but I am not sure. I am also not so sure why they were ever put on sale on the UK market as I do believe they were built for the export market. These cleaners, whilst every bit as good as any Electrolux at that time, offered very little advantage over other models on sale. Neither cleaner has the facility to use as a blower, something only the Slimline range was unable to do until then, and the red model you have would have had plastic tubes. But by then a good deal of Electrolux cleaners were fitted with plastic tubes, so it wasn't exactly a machine of much lesser quality.

Hi Benny, The only reason I said 1988ish is I have a scanned pages of I think a Argos cat from 1988 that has the Elite in it as well as the Electrolux slimline z1165 and Electrolux z2030.
I have a Electrolux brochure from around 1987 that has the Slimlines,Elites and 2000 series in it. I think I posted a pic of it some time ago on here. The Elites say "Made in France" on them.
The Elites and Slimline models z1165 and z1185 all had plastic pipes. I like the slimelines as well)

Hello James. I wonder sometimes if cleaners came on the UK market in anticipation of abnormally high sales and/or an decrease in production of the models available. Maybe the Elite cleaners were built for a target non-UK audience and they didn't sell as well as expected. It is odd. Like you, I don't dislike them, I just don't see them as having any advantage over other models Electrolux were making. Naturally, I think the Elite was slightly cheaper in price, but not by a huge margin.

with wheels very similar to the Hoover compacts/vogues.

Infact the Elites very much so remind me to my eye of those hoover models.

Hi Benny, I've just looked at the 1988 cat page and the Slimline z1165 was £59.95 and the white Electronic z1700 Elite was £84.95 also the z2030 was £109.95.
I'm not sure what the red Elite sold for but £69.95 seems to ring a bell.

My word, that is a massive difference in price. I find it hard to believe that the 2030 is almost twice the price of the 1165. Thanks for sharing. So the Elite would have been a good deal cheaper. At those prices, the Elite would have been a much better buy than the 2030, all things taken into account, as they had the same motor.

I love the 80s styling of these ones, I've heard that they had a terrible problem with overheating because to get to the exhaust filter you had to take the casing apart. there was no easy way of replacing it? so you often find ones with melted casings where they got so bloody hot

Hi, Strange you should say that. The exhaust filter was really dirty. It's all clean now and lucky for me the casing isn't warped.
