I'm seriously considering adding an Electrolux {genuine} canister to my small collection...I've never owned an Electrolux but was always curious about them.

I'm leaning towards the Epic 6000 if I can find one in great condition...I like the lighted power nozzle on that model and the traditional metal wand and sheath. And the color too...blue...reminds me of UNC...go Heels...lol

I'm not a fan of the all plastic wand assembly...don't like the look of it...

The picture below is what I'm leaning towards...but open to suggestions...

Any suggestions on which model old or new I should look at? Any models to avoid past or present? Are the older all metal canisters with power nozzles better?

Thanks

Second that

I don't think you could go wrong with the Epic 6000. If you can get a Sidekick with it, all the better; it'd make a good regular vacuum.

I'm with you on the later all plastic wands and redesigned hose handle, but they are good for carpet cleaning, especially with the swivel elbow on the power nozzle.

The Epic is a darned good vacuum in my estimation; it's relatively lightweight, the powernozzle is fairly agressive and the filtration with the post motor filter is adequate, but I'm partial to the older metal Luxes. In my experience they're more stoutly built, they seem to run forever without any problems and they aren't as noisy. I have used many different vacuums over the years but always seem to keep a good old Electrolux as a mainstay. For the last couple years at least My Diamond Jubilee has been a "daily driver" and performs admirably for my needs.

@lovecanisters

I have an Epic 6000 like the one in your picture but mine has a beige PN, not a blue one. It really is a great canister and very light weight. I had an Epic 6500 for many years and I really like the Epic 6000 much better. As for the newer Lux machines, Ill take my Renaissance over any other one any day, but for a real no nonsense work horse, the 6000 is certainly the way to go.

BTW, I'm very surprised that you have never owned an Electrolux especially since you are from LI. There is an Aerus/Electrolux store right on Montauk HWY, just east of the Robert Moses in West Islip which has been there for years. Ive been past it many times as one of my friends live off Pace Dr South which is right by the Aerus store. I'm all the way up on the north shore, but the Sunken Meadow/Sagtikos is only about 10 minutes east of my house and its a fast and easy trip to get to West Islip and the beaches :) I've found that machines like Filter Queen and Rainbow's are rare in this area, but Electrolux vacs have always been around. Before the European machines came into the market, in this area Electrolux was the most exclusive canister to own.

@bimmer740

I didn't know many people with Electroluxes in West Islip, lol...most of my friends north and south of montauk hwy had Hoover & Kenmores, even Eurekas growing up...One friend's mom had a JC Penney {Eureka style} Canister in Brown...

My family was mostly Hoover and Kenmore through the years...and still is... I did have Aunt with an Electrolux, think it was a 1205 based on the research here...it was blue/turquoise with the cloth hose...I remember seeing it at her house in the closet...I don't recall an Electrolux store in West Islip, you may be thinking of the one in Bayshore or Babylon Village...I left WI in 98' so, maybe it's something new...I remember those stores and seeing the vacuums in the window passing the stores...I would always be happy with backed up traffic and red lights to see the vacuums as a child, moreso in Babylon Village, as we never ventured into Bayshore...haha

Where are you on the N. Shore? I lived in Wading River for 8 years before moving to NC...loved it there...and none of my friends/neighbors there had Electroluxes either...haha

Please share some photos of your 6000 :)

I would take a Diamond J over any plastic body Lux. It has the tougher metal body and has the stronger motor, like a 6000. I guess the downside would be the fact that it won't have the after-filter or on-board storage for all of the attachments.

Lux Classic

How good are they? All I know is the Lux Classic costs $900 (at least in S. TX) Too bad the PN on the Classic doesn't have headlamp like the Legacy & Guardian Ultra. How quiet is the Classic vs. Guardian Ultra vs. Legacy? If the Classic is as quiet as the 1205, I'll probably buy one soon.

Why don't Aerus offer aluminum wands anymore like they used to on their metal tank vacs?

Lux Classic

I found this at an estate sale in 2005, and paid $40 for it. I gave it to my sister, who has a black lab, when she moved into an apartment that had a mix of carpet and bare floors. It followed her to Portland, when she went to grad school. She graduated back on the 13th of June, only a few weeks ago. Robert and I went and visited her, saw her graduate. She is sort of in a transitional time in her life right now, and wasn't sure where she was going to land.. so we sent a few boxes of "stuff" that she really wasn't going to need in the immediate future to our house back in Minneapolis. Among one of the things I agreed to "store" for her was her vacuum.

It arrived the other day, and we have company coming this weekend -- so I figured I'd use it and put it through its paces while cleaning up the house.

I've actually been pretty pleased with it. While it's no metal-body Lux, it's still very well made and pretty durable considering. I've really enjoyed using it, and will probably keep it in the rotation for a while, or until she needs it back. I really like the combo-tools (dusting brush/upholstery tool & rug/floor nozzle). The powerhead works very well on the carpet upstairs, and the cleaner is pretty quiet overall. Being plastic, it's also light enough for me to pick up and carry with me while vacuuming, which is something that I usually end up doing when I'm using a canister. I'm unsure of how it compares, noise-wise, to other Luxes.

I'd definitely put my stamp of approval on this cleaner! My sister has also told me on numerous occasions how much she loves this vacuum. Having a black lab, she's constantly vacuuming...

Lux Classic

It's great how a basic design has survived for so long with so few changes, even going back to the '50's with the bags and attachments. I wonder if they still make the early version of the Sidekick as an optional purchase with the Classic?

Speaking of Lux's

I notice on Ebay a LOT that they sell packs of 100 bags for like 30 dollars. They say 4 ply. I've always wondered why they were so cheap. You could almost change the bag every time you vacuum.

I bought an Electrolux Olympia with power nozzle at a flea market several years ago, the hose was shot, and the motor on the power nozzle was locked up. I took it too a local vac shop and had it fixed for around $30.00, and bought a new hose off of eBay for $34.00, and it's been one of the best canisters I've ever owned. I also have a Electrolux AE, paid $5.00 for it at the Salvation Army Thrift Store. Then a friend from automaticwasher.org gave me an Electrolux XXX.

I found an Electrolux Ambassador on the curb & its missing the hose, crevice tool & floor brush. The PN was in fair shape; but I took it home anyways. Good thing I always have an Electrolux (now 3 of them) & wouldn't ever want to be without one.

I just wish the Lux Classic wasn't so expensive. How much do they cost elsewhere?

ELECTROLUX ROCKS!

Brian, if I was going to go with a Electrolux canister, I would go with the plastic body style, BUT try to avoid anything made after 1995, & do get one with the L-shaped PN & metal wands with outer sheath. The reason for this is is that after 1995, the quality of their motors reduced DRASTICALLY, & started using single-stage motors in some of their products, such as the Renaissance.

Ideally if you could find a 2100, Ambassador, or System 90, that would be good. They will look EXACTLY like Fred's Lux Classic above, just in other colors. If you go this route, you will have a vac that will last a long time & provide dependable, reliable service.
