Dysons are one of the best bypass motor,or clean-air, uprights on the market. I've had my DC-14 for about three months now and use it daily, and has done extremely well. The floor head seals to the carpet more so then any other vacuum I have ever used. The tools are much better than other department store brands, and the filtration is great.
I am not sure how well it deep cleans though. I have seen videos by vacuum stores comparing the Dyson to various brands and the Dyson always looses. However they always use commercial-grade carpet, and very little people have this carpet in their home. It seems to do an okay job for me; certainly not anywhere close to a Hoover Concept or a Sanitaire.
I do dislike some parts of the vacuum. The brush-roll loves to collect hair, so I have to clean it much more often than other vacuums. It is also very bulky and a little top heavy.
If you must own a department store vacuum, Dyson is the way to go. I wish Hoover could come up with something better, but Dyson is king at this point.
