Dream Vac found - Kenmore

I had been wanting a Kenmore Magic Cord vacuum for a couple of weeks having first gotten a set of attachments, then a big load of bags.

So yesterday I found on CL, the vacuum I wanted. It was kind of a task getting a hold of the guy, texts, calls, being given the wrong address.... but finally I picked up.

The surprise was he had the snap on tool rack with 2 black kenmore (not Sears branded)attachments. It was not in the original picture.

Further inspection when I got home, the (foam?) pre-motor filter (what was left of it) was just a few melted pieces. After cleaning that off, replacing the bag, I hooked it up to the hose and power nozzle.

Sounds good. It will definitely need a complete spa. There is one very small slit where the hose and the hose cuff join.

Question, I had heard these hoses fail, but this hose looks like an electric blank hose, with the Kenmore electrical ends, stuck inside. Is this some later replacement of standard configuration.

Anyhow, here is the BEFORE:

first picture is at my house. Sorry, full sunlight obscures the yellowing plastic. The next 2 are his post pictures. I will be doing some Retrobrite treatment after spa. I understand you can make the bleaching agent at home using household products.

an inside shot so I know what the pre-motor filter looked like and how it was attached?

pre motor filter

dont use the crap sponge filter. use fpr 10 a/c filter from home depot or merv 13 a/c filter . you filtration will be MUCH improved. fwiw the old crap filter was glued. the a/c filter i cut to fit slightly oversized so it press fits in. wire mesh side facing down do the motor doesn't ingest the filter media.

looks like the interior of you model differs from mine. I actually found this after I posted. Mine more resembles this configuration...well I mean it is open, no enclosure or lid.

I may be seeing you picture incorrectly or my vacuum is missing some sort of cover over my motor.

I think I have one of those covers in the basement. Do you want it? Maybe $5 plus shipping? It should shop.fairly cheap.

let me post a picture of the interior of my vacuum. Then we will know for sure if anything is missing for this model.

I failed to notice and add, that there was a plastic circular frame that the foam was glued to and was pressed into place.

I will post it in the morning.

On another note, it came with a dusting and upholstery brush in black. I have a white set. I doubt I will found the matching floor and crevice in black, so I will store them.

I also found more splitting on the hose, I have a fix in mind and will share when I finish with it.

Otherwise I ave filters that fit over the motor. It's just thin "Cheese filter" in a plastic basket, but that can be changed for Cut down to size or HEPA media

the black ones are correct for that 83/84 model. white are not correct.

Andy, I would be intersted in the filter if you have one. I am wondering if the motor sizes are all standard on those machines. Let me know if you have one and we can arrange. Thanks. Richard.

I believe I have 2 of those filters around. They fit over the Lamb/Ametek motors.

It came with that round slip-on filter, the thin foam and disintegrated and had to be vacuumed off of the motor top. I will figure what to replace the foam with.

I took the filter frame off and cleaned the motor. I found tiny remnants of it in the motor chamber when I removed the motor. Found none anywhere else.

It is drying having been Spa-ed yesterday. I removed everything except the on/off switch. The PN has already been Spa-d.

Then bottom metal cover had a wiring diagram, but I marked the wires that go together. *fingers crossed*.

I will reassemble, test and then see about bleaching the yellowed surfaces.

While everything dries completely, my attention has been diverted to my newest vacuum. (See next post).

Hey Will,

So I will have to find a black floor/Wall brush and a crevice to be correct. I will watch for or perhaps they will be offered.

I also believe there is a metal floor tool...was that black too?

Update..

The seller found the black floor/wall brush. Not sure if they intended to hold it back, but I will find our today if they want more money for it.

The vacuum has been Spa-ed. All the dust/dirt/debris has been cleaned out and it looks and smells great.

I managed to get the wiring back correctly on the first try. So all that is left is to patch the 2 slits on the handle end of the hose, find a black crevice tool and rescue the black floor/wall brush from the seller.

I will take a picture when I am done, but until I bleach the yellowed surfaces, it will look pretty much like the first picture...just way cleaner and more sanitary.

News....

my good friend Scott and I traded around vacuums and he was kind enough to give me another Kenmore Magicord. His is in better shape cosmetically, no hose, and the cord reel has about a foot of cord wrapped around it.

There is no yellowing (sun damage). Last night I gutted it, washed it this morning and will wait a day or so to make sure everything is dry.

I still have to dust and examine the motor. It also had the round pre-motor filter.
Plan is to use the first machine to complete the second. Knowing me, I will then seek to complete the first machine when components come available.

I picked a rough one up this week just for the attachments and caddy. Turned out the attachments were a hodge podge of different vacuum parts. I am planning to strip the vacuum or find a way to store it more compactly.

I was re-admiring the picture you posted of your beautiful blue Kenmore Magicord and noticed your dusting brush seems to have the Sears badge and the other two say Kenmore.

Are they all supposed to say one or the other?

Sucess at last!

So here is the final beauty shot. I was going to use the vac today, but I am still letting the sealer application to the hose splits a chance to cure. Perhaps Monday.

This is not the original machine that I got earlier this week, it is the vacuum given to me by Scott. I thought I would use his as a parts machine only to find it in better shape cosmetically. Notice there is a place to store extra bags. The bags I found fill up the whole compartment. I used the black tools from my now parts machine. I do not have a black crevice tool.
