Does your family or friends ever use your vacuums?

Once in a while my mom will use one of my vacuums if she needs to clean something real quick and hers needs emptied or cleaned up. This week she told me she used m Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive upright and she said she thought it was a very good vacuum. She said she pressed one button though and it started having lights flashing. So I think she pressed the IntelliClean button which is like UK Hoover's Autosense and varies the suction based on the dirt sensor.

She has also used one of my canisters once or twice also.

I haven't used any of my family's vacuums other than my mom's. I did have a friend who also had a Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive but the bagless version. I was cleaning her windows and used it to clean the screens and around the window sills. I really liked that vacuum also, I think she wondered why I was using it so much. lol I don't believe she has it anymore, last I saw she got a Shark Lift Away but that was a few years ago. She used to get Kenmore and Kenmore Elite everything but she had bad experience with the Oasis washer and dryer so switched to other brands.

My ex-girlfriend has been using my Kirby Heritage 1HD since she 'borrowed' it in early 2013. Conversely, I've gotten several vacs from my family, including the aforementioned Kirby. One of my Electrolux 1205s (I have two) was rescued from the curb by my dad in about 1981 and subsequently rescued by me from their attic some 35 years later. I also have a Hoover QuikBroom that I grabbed from my parents' garage. Back in the late '80s, I got their tan and green 'Brady Bunch' Hoover Convertible, which I used for about 10 years before dropping it off at Goodwill when I was moving.

I bought my mother a hoover windtunnel max bagged and my grandmother a kirby ultimate G but generally since i do all the vacuuming on Thursdays i usually just use my own vacuums or borrow there vacuums, i do plan on taking my grandmothers dirt devil stick vac when i move out i rescued it from the garage and now it lives in the bathroom closet where it's only use is picking up hair from when me and my brother shave or trim our hairs but it's nice to have a bagless for that don't need to be instantly filling my bagged vacuums but generally i use there vaccums they don't use mine

My wife uses my Riccar Vibrance Classic once a week. She doesn’t like canister vacuums, so generally she leaves my power teams alone.

It is been more than 40 years since I lived at home, and both my parents are dead. They don’t borrow anything from me. My husband only uses our central vacuum with the hide a hose. I hate Tacony Corporation and their products so much, I refuse to have anything to do with them in my house. We sold our volt battery power nozzle and now we have the battery Perfect power nozzle. They have designed it with a nearly silent belt and driver system. As far as my friends, they are almost all vacuum collectors so they are free to borrow, use, clean with, and to get out any of my vintage Vacuums anytime they want. In the photo is Bob H. who is my best Friend and was my best man at my wedding, using my Air-Way signature series.

It's just my wife and I

She doesn't use any of my vacuums, which are all bagged and direct air. Old-fashioned, clumsy, "uncool", out-of-date -- just the way I like it. I did buy her a Dyson Animal 2 for her birthday, however, which she uses, so she could vacuum again.

Up until this year, we had just the Sanitaire SC886 (I have picked all of our appliances). She admitted that it worked well but was really plain and old fashioned and was surprised to learn that these are still made and sold as new, and wondered why I paid over $200 for something so outdated. I reminded her that those are the best selling commercial vacuum, and for good reason, which is why you'd see them in hotels, schools, offices, stores, etc.

Now that I have a few machines older than us (a 1965 Kirby DS50, a 1974 JCPenney Hoover Converitble, a 1975 Hoover Convertible (that I am now restoring), a 1988 Kirby Heritage II Legend and a 1988 Royal 884), she is surprised that those machines work just as good as -- and even better than -- modern mass-marketed machines, and still run like they were new. I just tell her that they all have one thing in common, they were all made by hard-working Ohioans (since Royal, Hoover and Kirby were all produced in Ohio, with Kirby still being produced there to this day).

My 11 year old cousin used my DS50, which is on display in our foyer, but only with close supervision. He actually said that it would be cool if vacuums were still like this. I told them they kind of are, and that's when I introduced him to my Kirby Avalir.

My family usually ends up with any vacuums that I no longer need/want. For example, my parents now have my Riccar Supralite because they're in their 70's and no longer want to mess with their central vac system. My brother got my Miele canister when I built a home with central vac.

On another note, Tom - how do you like the Perfect/Centec battery powerhead vs. the Volt? I personally find the Volt to be pretty clunky but until recently it was the only "plug and play" powerhead for hide a hose. The Perfect nozzle looks like it would be much easier to maneuver but I would still want great carpet lines and good cleaning performance.

I LOVE the Perfect power nozzle. The new serpentine belt is awesome. So quiet. Great carpet lines. It's lower than the Volt, and with no fan in the way there's no need to be careful when picking up little pebbles the Border Collies bring in their paws. You'll love it. When I opened my own vac shop two months ago, I had to decide what to sell. Of course, no Simplicity or Riccar. I know that with no quality control manager at the factory, the quality has gone to hell. So I chose Perfect, along with Aerus Electrolux. Sanitaire for the commercial customers, as well as the Perfect copy of the Lux upright. Even though they are made in China (as is most of the parts, cords, brushes, motors that Tacony uses)Perfect machines are VERY high quality.

Thanks for the feedback Tom! I really want to get my hands on one but need to figure out how to unload the Volt as there aren't too many hide a hose users in my area.

no one to borrow

I would let some use SOME of my machines if they needed ( lent out my Rainbow SE to my step daughter and she really liked it), but not my restored ones probably. I have a few that I would lend out if needed of course....I want to broaden the minds of those who would use them to reconsider older well built machines vs just plastic crap so prevalent today.

My Mother!

Nobody really uses mine in my house except my mother, and I wish she wouldnt! Its not very often she does because I usually always do the vacuuming but when she does I would rather her just leave it altogether! She isnt thourough enough for me, but thats no surprise since us collectors are bound to do a better job than the average Joe. Thats not the problem though, the problem is her! She never puts the hose back properley after using the tools, she doesnt put the attatchments back properley either she just leaves them on the end of the extension tube, and just wraps the cord around a few times and gets fed up and leaves the rest of it trailing. I can always tell in my house if she has used the vacuum before me. I think she gets confused though because there are so many to choose from. To be honest, it gives me a glimpse of the reality that the everyday consumer brobably does. I cant see too many people lovingly and caringly putting there vacuums away anymore. I always shout MOTHER! have you been vacuuming again? And she just laughs. Ha! She means well though
