Dial-A-Matic problem

I received a Hoover Dial-A-Matic this morning and i was using it a smoke started pouring out the switch but the vacuum kept running what could have caused this

bad switch more or less, looks like there also could have been a short.

Well I put in a new switch but I won't be able to test it until the morning
