Dial-a-Matic Brushrolls wanted

Hello guys, I'm going to restore some of the dial-a matics of mine and I need to purchase some original metal brushrolls for them as, especially the mid-eighties, dial-a-matics made in France for european market used a plastic brushroll with no repleaceable brushes and plastic beating bars. Original brushrolls are no longer available in Italy and some repair centers use to fit Convertible's brushrolls cutting them a little bit and fixing original DAM's brushoroll's ends and inner shaft but this is not good epecially because on convertibles brushing action is directed towards the center of cleaning nozzle while on dams it has to be directed to the side where suction opening is.
Would any of you be able to purchase some brushrolls for me or sell me some old ones as I can still find ball bearings bearings and brush strips for them?
Any help will be much appreciated.

Heya Tommy-

Yes, these brushrolls are somewhat difficult to find...

For starters, they were discontinued about 4 years ago... That, and the cleaners weren't made for as long in the US as they were made in other parts of the world (you allude to them being produced in France for Europe into the 80s - where the last DAMs produced in the US were in 1978 or so).

That doesn't mean they aren't out there - would just have to look for them pretty diligently (compared to Convertible brushrolls - where replacements are still being made, albeit not genuine).

The other thing with DAM agitators was, if they didn't get lubricated every few years, the tension from the belt pulling on the one end would allow the bearing in the belt-pulley end to heat up... it would get so hot it would fuse itself to the belt pulley. So, then when one wanted to lubricate it, the bearing wouldn't come out. Most people wouldn't pay upwards of $40 for a new brushroll.

Hey Tommy, will keep an eye open on my travels, they are a bit like gold dust here as well...heres my 1128 & the last one produced of the Hoover UK convertables the u5032!!

What was the last one produced with you Fred??? and in Italy Tommy??

That burgundy one is absolutely gorgeous! It's a shame they weren't available here in the states. I'm assuming by the time that model was produced, we already had the Concept 1. I wished it could have lived a longer life here, even if it meant switching to a plastic base (ala the Convertible).

Hello Mike, your 5032 is lovely and it has never been sold in Italy in that color! The last one sold in Italy was mod. U 5076 in two-tones of grey til 1989-1990. I have one and like it very much! Thank you for keeping an eye open for brushrolls!

Convertable UK

I never remember seeing the colour here myself, we still arnt sure if it was a "SPECIAL" for C0-op or other store etc...its a lovely colour I agree, BUT thats another thing that Hoover where famous for, they loved their COLOURS!!!

I nearly didnt get it, I went to pick up a Hoover washer & dryer and a couple of vacs from a supplier, he had a "JUNK" corner and said mays well help yourself to those for free...so I did and all where filthy & grimey so I didnt realise the significance until I posted about it!!!

And to think, you guys had the DAM, a full 10 years after they were discontinued here! I kinda like the way they incorporated the power switch into the top of the frame assembly. I suppose that was done because of the voltage difference. Were these the only models available in Italy, or were there others?

for what I know these are the only ones we had, and the earliest was the white_blue on the left, still with switch on the handle, and two powerdrivers U 6033.

Is the U5032 mechanically identical to the usual 1120 range ?

Hello Walter, in my opinion Mod 5032/5034 are exactly the same machine as 1120 range with the difference of the front cover inherited from the Power Drives with headlight.Later models U U5034 featured a plastic brushroll replacing the traditional metal hoover agitator and their sound is a little bit quieter, smoother,and in my opinion less effecient than the previous. The last model produced in France for European models, mod U 5076, features a two-speed switch (530 and 800 watts) and sadly older Hooverflex hose was replaced by a common standard plastic hose with pistol grip (like the one used on late Sensotronics). I have dismanted and remounted several of them and the motor is just the same for all models, even shared with portable (italian "neccessaire"and portapower vacuum cleaners.

Hello Tommy,

Thank-you for the information, I suspected the late 'convertables' as they were know over here might have had plastic brush rollers.....certainly the plastic roller in my little junior U1104 gives a remarkably good 'beat n sweep'.

Love the space you appear to have for storing all your machines !!!
