So what was the first Whirlpool lightweight upright? The CVR1000? Also, if the design failed for Whirlpool, why were they making the unit in the video below in the 70's?

Thanks for that reply Alex. 😊

I guess I have been very very happy with my Hoover Platinum Lightweight bagged upright…such a great deep carpet cleaner and such a pleasure to use. Can’t figure out why TTI discontinued it. Consumer Reports gave it a higher rating for deep carpet cleaning than any Oreck (excellent)….probably due to the segregated air channels in the “WindTunnel” brush roll chamber.

I did liked that Platinum, I sold the Royal version before when I was working at a vacuum store. I'm pretty sure they got rid of them for a couple of reasons, the handle had problems with the build quality and reliability of the sensors, and marketing. Hoover did tried to re-enter the market with their ONEPWR cordless model but that didn't sell too well. I honestly don't trust Consumer Reports, I know they've been sued a couple times for their falsifying testing and they really don't know what they're talking about. Especially with vacuums. Recently they gave a Maytag Commercial top load washer a "poor" rating which I have no idea where they came up with that result because there's online videos from YouTubers like Lorain Furniture that showed how excellent the washer was. Or another example is this video from CR about their pick for the best vacuum back in 2008 and there were LOTS of machines in the background that would've easily beat their best pick.

Love him or hate him or his vacs, you can't deny the man was a damn good salesman. He was old school and knew how to carry the pitch. I never got tired of watching his commercials and how he demonstrated the vacuums. Many seniors and the elderly trusted him and his vacuums and they sold so well to that market, plus the hotel and light industrial market as well for businesses with low pile carpet. They also are dead simple to repair and the entire vacuum can be disassembled with one Philips screwdriver and fixed with virtually no experience. Great vacuums to learn repair on. Much respect to him and these vacuums for what they do and what he did. [salute]

RIP David Oreck

I was honestly incredibly saddened to hear this. Him and his infomercials were such an ingrained part of my childhood, and his vacuums were incredibly good for what they were capable of. And like others here said he stood by his product and believed in it till the very end. Whether it was the XL or the XL 21. And not only that, but serving his country in the Army Air Forces in WWII, hes an absolute hero, prayers for him and his family. RIP David Oreck

I think this was my most favorite Oreck informercial that I've ever saw. There used to be more parts of this video on YouTube but they're not there anymore. I have both the red and the black one but I'm still looking for the yellow one and the black canister that comes with either one.

I signed into vacuumland for the first time in awhile after seeing the news. Recently had a death in the family and I thought to check if David Oreck was still alive. This is definitely sad. As a younger collector growing up in the early 2000s he was a big part of the contemporary vacuum market and I loved watching him. I always liked Orecks. I begged my family for one for Christmas and got a new Classic in 2003. It was our “daily driver” for probably 8 years. The 4amps are so loud. The older 3amp and newer XL21 variants don’t scream as much. If they were a tad quieter I’d have almost no complaints.

I remember when all us of were skeptical of the Hoover and Royal TTI buyouts, but they’ve treated us well. TTI Orecks are basically the same as they were before the buyout as well. I’m glad Oreck still lives, even with the old man gone. Rest in peace
