Dangerous Dehumidifier Recalls

If anyone has purchased a new Dehumidifier in the last several years you may want to go to the makers web site and check for recall.

We had been having a problem with a circuit breaker going off. I was thinking it was the outside yard light. When I went to the basement I found our dehumidifier was the problem. When you restarted it, it would run fine for 30 minutes and then kick the breaker off again. No strange sounds or actions from the unit.
I went to the makers web site to find a location to have it checked as it was only about 4 years old. I found that:

(1) it has NO Repairable parts or service
(2) it was MADE IN CHINA
(3) Big recall and it is a fire hazard

I was referred to another 800# and sure enough this China company made dehumidifers for almost EVERY brand name you can imagine. You hit the key for your maker and then they can tell you if yours was among the recall. You are instructed to STOP using the unit and cut the cord. I just sent in for a refund today.
They are a fire hazard.

Thanks for the link. Just like where I had our dehumidifier!
No more China made vacs for me. At least with a vacuum you would be using the item and it would not be in the basement running while you were upstairs asleep!
I sent a new China made vacuum to a friend for a Birthday gift and he was using it the FIRST time and it burned out. It makes you wonder.

I remember

My Grandparents saying the same thing about products made in Japan and they made

quality items hence Japanese cars same thing with Korea .

China can make quality all the new high end Hoovers are of Top quality from China .

Dan - By the way long time no chat - hope all is well. I am with William - I am really concerned about manufacturing in China. Not so much the quality but a recent article I read about child labor - made me ill. Here is the article in USA Today

Child Labor in China

China’s child labor is a huge problem, and there is clear evidence that child labor is increasing in China. Although there is no official figure on the number of children working in China, it is estimated by many that of the 10 million children out of school, over 5 million are working in factories. There are some who even consider this a conservative estimate. It was reported in Sichuan, China’s most populated province, that 85% of children who drop out of school are working elsewhere. Even in some less populated rural provinces, over 20% of the work force is made up of children. Also, in the last few years, the rate of children kidnapped has increased rapidly. It is believed that the children kidnapped are sold off to factories to work. For example, in 1994, about 48 Chinese brick-shop-workers kidnapped over 100 children. It is known that fourty of those children were forced to work 10 hours a day, but with no wage whatsoever. China’s child labor cannot be overlooked.

U.S. manufacturing is selecting China for cheap labor at the cost of children. Yep that top of the line vacuum may be great but did it ever cross anyone's mind it was assembled by a 9 year old earning less then 10.00 per month? Why so we could buy it in the USA for 99.95 if you act now!!!

I am doing great thanks hope your doing well .

This will never change anytime soon because American consumers demand LOW prices and with costs here in the US between union labor costs and taxes companies are forced to use China to make their products .

I am not for child labor but if you can prove to me that Hoover uses child labor then we can talk about it .

My grandparents used to tell my uncle that children built his Honda Accord .

I need proof and can't just blame someone without solid proof that example is 19 years old .

There is also a recall on older Kenmore dehumidifiers, made between 2003-2005, also for fire hazard. Google "Kenmore Dehumidifier Recall" and that should bring up a link. Ours was included in the recall and we were given a the option of either a $75 Sears gift card (yeah sure), or a $75 check and $25 toward a new dehumidifier. Just had to send in the information tags and part of the cord.

"No repair just throw it away"

We had a Kenmore dehumidifier we bought back in 1998 or so. There was a recall on them a few years later. If I remember right the control panel was at fault and a switch could overheat. Something about the two speed fan switch was bad if I recall right. Sears came out and replaced the control panel for free. I believe the unit was made by Whirlpool and also came under that brand and one more I can't remember now.

It was probably made in the USA also, a big difference between that and new units. Just throw it away and we'll send you the money indeed!

I still have my 1970s JC Penney dehumidifier & it still runs like new without any problems
