This may sound like a waste of time but I was thinking about taking a normal Full-Door central vacuum inlet but by drilling a hole and installing a push-button switch that automatically turns on the vacuum as soon as the door to the valve is opened (kind of like Budd, Kenmore and Genuine Vacuflo inlet valves). I'm doing this for no reason except to see if it can be done so I would like it very much if I could get everyone's opinion on it. I selected this plan instead of using a Vacuflo valve because I can plug in any hose from any set that I can possibly dream of. If it doesn't work, my plan is to use a Vacuflo valve.

If I were you I think I would check eBay and local vacuum shops for old Kenmore inlets if that's the sort of inlet you want. There might be some floating around from people who have upgraded their inlets. Personally I prefer the convenience of the Supervalve/Electravalve.

Definitely doable, the connection to the unit is a simple low voltage cable. You could find a normally open toggle switch, like what some alarm systems use on the hinge side of doors to detect openings, then drill the hole you mentioned and wire it up. It may be hard to find a NO contact, but really any momentary pushbutton could work as long as the circuit is opened when the button is depressed.

Kind of unrelated to your idea, but this reminds me of a useless idea I had once myself, and that was to decorate up a central vac inlet to look like a small Containment Unit from Ghostbusters. I mean, if people can make unique looking light-switch covers, then what's stopping people from doing the same with CV inlets? I was originally thinking on using a Hayden Sqaure door inlet for it, since it most closely matches the look of the Containment Unit, but the more I think about it, I think a retractable hose system inlet would be a better option, but I don't plan on buying one anytime soon, so yeah. Maybe i'll get around to doing it someday, maybe not.
