Hello everyone!

Just wanted everyone's 2 cents on the current upright carpet cleaners available.

It seems like the mid-1990s Hoover Steam Vac, of which my family purchased one and still seems to be a popular choice, had much stiffer scrubbing brushes back then when compared to today. About a year ago I purchased a current version of the Steam Vac, and the brushes seemed so light and no "elbow grease" hardly at all the give my berbers a good deep scrub. I'm wondering if Hoover had gotten complaints about damages being done to carpets?

I current have the Rug Doctor Carpet Cleaner (red model that was available at Wal Mart; not as big and heavy as the Mighty Pro Line). It certainly has stiff bristles, both a row of vibrating ones and on a separate brush roller, but it has its faults. It is still MUCH heavier than the Hoover Steam Vac, cleaning only occurs in reverse, and the water tanks are VERY small and require way too much filling and emptying for even a small living room.

I was wondering your thoughts on the Bissell Proheat Revolution. I have thought about a Bissell for quite some time now, and their bristles look like they'd give a good deep scrub. For the longest time I wanted nothing to do with the in-tank bladder system, though; heard nothing but complaints about that setup. However, the Revolution has a two-tank system to resolve that issue. I also saw an infomercial on it as well. Any personal experiences?

Is the Steam Vac still the best all around in performance and value? Just wish it would give a deeper clean.

Thanks!

The...

Bissell machines of any kind tend to be a cheaply built mess these days. We've had just about every recent model in shortly after release for major issues, be it motor failure, tank/seal/gasket failure leaking water everywhere, issues with pumps. Basically you name it we've seen it, I wouldn't trust the Bissell extractors as far as I can throw them.

Tom is on the right path, if you want truly clean carpets this is the approach I would take (and have taken). Forget letting the extractor do all the work, while the idea of all in one is appealing it brings forth quite a few issues. Get something like the Elux above, or a Koblenz or similar scrubber/buffer/polisher to truly give the carpets a scrub. To go along with that buy a pump sprayer to fill with hot water and your favorite cleaning solution. Pretreat the carpet with the spray and let it sit for a few minutes, then take the scrubber to agitate the solution in. After load the Hoover up with hot water only to get a full rinse without solution residue in the carpet. That's the most effective way I've found to clean. It does take more time and a little more hassle, but the results are worth it and longer lasting since you're not leaving as much soap solution in the carpet.

Forget the consumer machines-rent a Rug Doctor or hire a truck mount!I tried a truck mount-Pro-Chem Apex it was AWESOME!!!!200" suction @600CFM!!!carpet almost dry after using it!A truck mount-the package will cost 100 grand-to pay for it you will have do do others carpets. Was fun to try, though. The 100 grand is the whole thing, machine, truck, hose, and attachments-solution tank, mix tank andn used fluid tank. The machine has two filters-one inline with the hose at the truck end,and a final filter in the used solution tank.

Thanks everyone so far!

@tom, how much do those Electrolux machines cost? I often thought about one of those type scrubbers, especially after looking through old Sears catalogs and seeing both Sears and Hoover brands of those machine setups.

My only reservation was residual carpet shampoo left for dirt to re-attract more sooner than later, but I guess a clean water rinse with a Hoover Steam Vac would complete the process.

What is your process Tom, with the Electrolux?

The Bissell Big Green Clean machine is a very nice machine. It was designed to better the Rug Doctor. I've been impressed with mine. It seems to really dig out the dirt. I like the Bissell chemicals too, particularly the one for pet urine elimination.

Bissell Big Green

Let me add another endorsement of the Bissell Big Green. It's great. It has transformed my carpets and is easy to use too. At this point I couldn't do without one. Get the turbo brush and it will work well on stairs too. You can sometimes catch them on sale directly from Bissell.

Big green

Love my big green as well, it's the best I've used and I had a rug doctor. Sometimes I will use my lux floor pro to scrub a pre treat solution bought from janilink.com then go over it with clean water and a small amount of vinegar in the big green.

We have a Bissell Proheat, I'm not sure how old it is, but it's maroon and my grandparents gave it to us because they got wood floors. It did a pretty good job on the carpeting and I was surprised how quiet it was.

Does anyone know who makes the Kenmore carpet cleaners? And were the Kenmore shampoo polishers made by Koblenz too?
