Curious to know if copyright permissions have been secured for the downloadable files on this site? I will not break the law by downloading manuals and literature unless there is a license or permission to copy statement included. I would hope that the webmasters and users of this site do not wish to break the law either.

Furthermore, how are the profits of paid downloads used? If such monies are used for personal gain that would also be problematic.

See the link regarding copyright laws: http://www.riaa.com/physicalpiracy.php?content_selector=piracy_online_the_law

While I am sure Robert has done everything by the book here, Are there not more important issues in life to worry about than if a 50 year old vacuum manual is copyrighted ?

Life is to short to be worried about copyrighted manuals for vacuums considering you can download most manuals from a host of sites in anycase.

I don't know agent man, I didn't think anyone cared to much anymore about antediluvian products, but nevertheless, you pose a loaded question!

Here's the Answer:

This is the notice about copyright concerns that Robert has posted on Automatic Ephemera:

"Copyright and Trademark Notices:
Most documents available on Automatic Ephemera have been confirmed to be in the Public Domain by the United States Copyright Office due to expiration without re-registration or were confirmed in the public domain from their inception. All documents in the Automatic Ephemera Library may be downloaded and used by residents of the United States or residents of foreign countries where the work is also located in their Public Domain. Download and use of any document that in not in your country's public domain is prohibited. For any documents that still are under copyright status in the United States we have received written permission from the content owner to offer their works in our library."

To view the original notice, visit the link below. I am a writer and editor, and I can tell you that Robert is one of the most knowledgeable and respectful people I've ever known when it comes to copyright. You can rest easy when you download something posted by him.

I can answer that.

Yes actually I have permission, if they are not in the public domain. So what that means is I have permission for every single document.

Rusty, for one thing you posted a link to the RIAA, they deal with sound recordings and not text documents. Sound and text copyright law is completely different.

If you wish to learn more about how copyright works you can start here, these works manuals fall under the "Works Registered or First Published in the U.S." section of that chart. Be sure to Google what "public domain" means if you don't know.

You bet there's better things to worry about than copyright infringement on vintage vacuum cleaner manuals....those better things being finding the manuals themselves!

Considering that this question is answered in the FAQ section of the Automatic Ephemera site, it's clear that you didn't even bother to look before implying that our highly esteemed web master might be trying to pull a fast one. That's quite a first impression to leave every one, since this is your first post.

That was my first impression, pretty much starting off on the wrong foot. It kinda had that feel of a Revenuer trying find out your still, not that I have one...I don't think!

Has it occurred to anyone that this person is possibly a troll? A big clue in that regard (aside from the snarky first posting) is that there's nothing at all filled in on his profile page.

No there was nothing wrong with Rusty asking a valid question, and we answered it. Since the original poster has not returned to the site I see no reason to continue this thread, so I will close it. If the OP returns and has any other questions he is more than welcome to email me.
