I found this circa 1915 Sweeper-Vac a couple of months ago at a local antique consignment mall. Thankfully it was very very reasonably priced and in near museum condition. Actually it looks better in real life than the pictures. Anyways, I wasn't familiar with these things at all other than I did have an early wooden Bissel sweeper which I gave to my antique loving neighbors when they built a new house. The one combines both the revolving "bissell type" brushroll and pneumatic suction. The brushroll and dustpan for it ride like a train bogey underneath while at the front there is a removeable floor suction nozzle. On the back underneath there is a larger drum like wheel with two wooden offset rods that must operate a bellows or something inside to create the suction as you push it back and forth. And also the little wooden framed bag which slides in behind the nozzle. The box itself is sealed so I'm not going to try opening it to see if the bellows inside are intact as they may have deteriorated by this time. It was made by the PneuVac Co. Boston MA and according to the gold filigree on top the Gold Highest Award for 1915. I did see another one on e-bay but it didn't have the brushroll part and may have been an earlier model.

Let's just say you need a determined push and pull. On the plush wall to wall even more so. On tile not so bad. The brushroll is turned by the friction of the units wheels contacting the wooden spools at either end of the brushroll and with any resistance pushing they just dont turn and rather slide which is what's happening on the plush carpet, no brushroll turning, turns fine on the tile. Me thinks that the brushroll carpet sweeper action probably always did more of the cleaning that the vacuuming aspect of it. But there was ancient dust and debris in the cloth bag.
