I have helped many people buy a vacuum. I steer them the commercial route. they end up tell me they always thought commercial vacs were ugly and not made for residental use. they like durability, gettings bags and belts and filters in bulk. they love the backpack style for doing stairs and dusting, and sometimes you can find them on the internet for cheap.
 
Plus,for the most part commercial vacuums are more DURABLE then residentual ones.I have two backpacks-don't like them for home use so much-the canister on your back can be awkward-(rather have it on the floor)and it is easy to bump into things with the machine on your back-hence "Bump into tragedies"I like my NSS M1-its heavy and large-but works well and moves surprizingly easily.Its large wheels help there-think all canister vacs need larger wheels.
 
I have owned probably a dozen or so back-pack vacuums over the years and the 2004 Pro-Team has been the very best quality and performer, by far. I've replaced the motor in my Super Coach vac once and the cloth bag a few times but it just keeps working like new. In rather hard daily use, it runs about 2 hours a day. When purchased, it was used for about 3+ hours every day, 6-7 days a week.

This has not been the case with nearly every other brand I've tried. The Hoover - Royal version is a good performer but a bulky and awkward to use design. The 2007 Sanitaire was by far the worst of them all. In twenty years, I've not had a worse performer and such pathetic durability in a back-pack.

One of the surprising stand-outs is the Dust Care. I found it on Craigslist for $100 only slightly used. The body of the unit is made from the same plastic as the Pro-Team Coach and Super-Coach but on a smaller scale. I've had to replace the switch and the hand-piece of the hose a couple of times but the parts are inexpensive (unlike Pro-Team parts) and the machine can use standard Tri-Star/Compact paper bags.

I use them in commercial buildings, homes, etc. Once you get used to the size of the unit on your back and aware of the space you need to move around and turn, it's not a big deal. The Back-Pack-Vac Dance!

I am either humming the Ghostbusters theme in my head as I vacuum or maybe I'll try blasting it from iTunes! Haha, haven't had any 'bump-ins' yet and my place is looking great! Can't wait to eliminate some more dusty ghosts when they appear!
