Best way to clean cushions

Vac salespeople always demo the machine by putting cushions into plastic bags and would use vac to draw all the air out (along with the dirt). Is this a good way to clean or is manual vacing better?

Hey, cuffs

If the cushion covers can unzip to remove them, do so.
Be sure to zip them closed before putting them into the washer.
Air dry, or replace on cushion while damp if you're afraid they'll shrink.

Don't put any cushion itself through the washer or dryer.

If the covers can't be removed, then steam cleaning is best
And/or use a mild upholstery detergent.
Dry with a blow dryer on low heat if you're worried about mildew.

If there's unwanted smells, lightly brush on some baking soda, then
vacuum it off.

FCS3, thanks for the reply. In the past I have taken the covers off and washed them, but it is too big a mess to undertake now. The plastic bag idea seems to make sense but seems to easy a solution.

Cuffs! I use the bag trick in my cleaning business but with a little upgrade. I cut the corners off the bottom of the bag to increase the airflow and it really "airs" them out.
The heavy construction bags seem to hold up the best and one will usually hold up for quite a while.

Packard, thanks! So you take big bag, cut lower corners off, stuff in cushion and then suck from the top end, yes?

Yes!!! Pretty simple. Start small though, about the size of a dime on each side. You will feel your way as to whether you need more air flow. Good luck!
