So if I was going to buy just one, vintage Royal upright.....and its use would be strictly residential....what would be a good model to shoot for? I don't care necessarily about size or heft, but durability. However, I don't want some monster, commercial upright that would seem out of place in a home. Carpets would run from thin to plush and include Berber.

Great....thanks so much! I meant to write that bags & spare parts need to be plentiful.

Are the cloth HEPA type bags available for this model?

Kevin

Bag?

What's the deal with the bag on the 880 auction from OR? Shouldn't the bag say Royal somewhere...is that a generic bag bought to save money?

Kevin

Ben.....

so if I wanted to use a HEPA type bag, I would need to buy an outer bag that takes the Royal Type B disposable bags? Are these available from Royal....ebay?

Kevin

I have a

801 I wouldn't trade for any other upright on earth, its a 1958 and I always go back to it, I have a late 70s 880 that is almost new in the box, pretty, but I like the old 801 better.

There are HEPA alternatives to the Royal type A disposables in the form of equivalents for the Eureka F&G disposable bags. I wonder if the Sanitaire Style ST HEPA disposables could suit you?

Funny you said that because the seller said it presently takes a Type F G bag. I have no idea what he's talking about.

Thanks....

Ben! I made the seller in OR and offer and he took it. So my first Royal (actually I have a Royal 120 volt hand vac and a Royal 12 volt car vac...lol) is on its way. I found places with parts, but all using part #'s and yet I can find no IPL for the Royal 880. Be nice to find a Owner's Manual too even if it's a pdf file....something.

I'm just gonna plug it in and see if there are any obvious problems....then completely break it down, service it and polish. I used to be an upright guy before Elux canisters took over my life.....be nice to have a quality upright again. Excited!

Kevin,

Congratulations on the seller accepting your preferred offer! You will not be disappointed when your 880 arrives and you put it to the test!

The gray bag I see on this machine at present is an aftermarket bag, as the metal spring that hooks to the top of the handle was never used by Royal at all... rather they used a chain-link hook.

This is what a model 880 looked like back in 1975... it was the last year the motor assembly had both rear and front bearings, this is why there'll be two oil caps present.

And here is an 880 parts list dating from the mid-1960s, plus an owner's manual dated 1985 (the latter courtesy of Matt Naiva aka upright886).

Ben....

thank you so much for all the help! I've been reading all I can on Royal uprights. I've got 'amp envy' with respect to the larger motors, but I'm sure it will do a nice job and I didn't pay a king's ransom for it.

The only thing that bothers me is the bag. I knew that wasn't the correct bag in the pic. Be nice to get a blue bag with a chain, but from what I've been able to glean from sources, that's going to be tough. I found a place that has electric motor brushes, but they say the new brushes will short themselves out with the metal brush caps....that you have to use plastic, but not sure they offer the plastic caps. And so it goes.......

I'm not sure how to capture the images you've posted. I can save as a link, but it won't let me copy them to store on my own PC. I hate to bother you more, but could you send me the images to my email and/or clue me a way to capture your posted images?

Kevin

Got them.....

all! Yeah, it doesn't give me a 'Save Image As' choice with right click...just 'Copy Link Location'. It's all good now because you sent in email.

I printed everything and stapled a little 'book' together. So......I'm on my way to Royal upright ownership! He doesn't picture the top blue handle in his auction....hope that was just an oversight on his part. I hope it doesn't come with someone else's dirt in the bag....I hate that.
