Hi Guys, im sure this has been discussed various times in the past, but which currently up to date is the best canister vacuum with powerhead to use in a home with wall to wall thick plush carpeting? or would an upright be a better solution? and do canisters with a good PN deep clean as good as an upright clean air vac?

If you have mostly/exclusively wall-to-wall carpeting, little or no hard floors and little above-floor cleaning, something like a Sanitaire, a metal Royal or, if you want to splurge, a Riccar Radiance/Simplicity Synergy would be hard to beat. But, if you prefer canisters, which I do, you'll find that good ones can indeed to as good a job as the better clean-air uprights.

My recommendations would be any of the following: any Tacony (Riccar/Simplicity) canister with the full-size power nozzle, especially the top-end one (Immaculate/Moxie) which has a three-row aluminum brush roll, any Miele with the SEB228 power nozzle or a Sebo K3/D4. Panasonic's MC-CG902 isn't bad either, on a budget, and can probably be fitted with a better power nozzle if you want. (Wessel Werk's EBK360 is hard to beat - it's pretty much the same as the Miele SEB228)

Of the lot, I personally like the Riccar/Simplicity machines the best, though the Miele and Sebo offerings are quieter. Mieles have some issues with short cords and hoses, and wheels that don't work especially well on deep carpets. Sebo isn't bad in this regard, though the power nozzle's height is adjusted with a dial that you have to bend down to tweak, while Miele and Tacony have foot-pedal adjustments. You want manual height adjustment, by the way - automatic tends to work acceptably everywhere but excels at nothing.

I really like Filter Queen and TriStar, though I think their current offerings don't quite measure up to their past designs, and in FQ's case specifically, their power nozzles aren't amazing. They're good, but you can do better.

Rainbow's unique power nozzle apparently turns in amazing performance, but Rainbows are very expensive, even second-hand, and a bit of an ordeal to set up. This may or may not be a problem for you, of course.

good to know..

are the PN's on the kenmores or panasonics as good as the riccar/simplicities? looks like the agitator on the simplicities/riccars look better?

No, not by a longshot. It's not bad, but I think the Riccar/Simplicity PN is probably the best in the business. I've used a few and compared some side-by-side at a local vacuum shop, and their Simplicity Gusto floor model (maybe it was a Moxie, either way... had the 3-row brush roll) shook the heck out of the test carpet and got all the sand and simulated pet hair in a single pass. I was really quite impressed.

Interestingly, they're both made by Centec - but the CPB-100 (Tacony nozzle) looks *nothing* like any of Centec's other designs. I wonder if it's Tacony's design but just produced by Centec?

The other PN design I really like is the Miele SEB228/Wessel Werk EBK360. I have one at home on my Filter Queen, and it does a bang-up job on cat hair, and gets ground-in sand and grit in a pass or two; it's about even with my Kirby Heritage II Legend.

See thats what i need

i need something to get the deep down grit out of my carpet. i have a deep plush frize carpet.. and so was wanting something that was gonna agitate that dirt to the suface.
i hear the uprights like the simplicity symmetries/riccar vibrance were good too? any experience with those? just kinda skepitcal about the auto height adj?

I have a Simplicity 6970, which is pretty close to the Symmetry (earlier version, basically), and I think it does a pretty good job. It certainly grooms and agitates well and has good airflow, but I have medium-pile carpets. I'm not sure how well it would work on a deep plush. The brush roll design is good, though, and it has plenty of airflow, so I'd think it would work at least decently.

Given the choice, though, I'd go with the Riccar/Simplicity or possibly Miele PN canister if the budget permits. Someone more familiar with the Sebo PN canisters might have more info on how they measure up. They look good to me but I don't have much hands-on experience.

Be careful...

because of the density of fibers in your carpet you may need a vacuum with suction control or else the vacuum may clamp down and be relatively hard to move. Check with the manufacturer, I got a nice deal on a Tristar CXL because of this very reason. The man who sold it to me ended up with a Miele cannister as per manufacturers specifications on his new carpet.

I prefer two separate vacuum cleaners - an upright for carpeting and a canister for everything else. The combination machines are often too cumbersome and bulky to use. The power nozzle canisters require trouble-prone electrical connections through the overly-bulky hose handles and wands. The uprights with on-board tools are often heavy and bulky to manoeuver and their hoses are often too short and cause tip-overs.

Besides that, you can leave no footprints on carpets cleaned with an upright because it is easy to vacuum backwards from the far end back towards the door. It's not easy to do that with a power nozzle canister which is best used going forward into the room with the canister trailing behind you.

I recommend the Hoover Platinum Bagged upright which is paired with a lightweight portable canister. If the mini Portapower is not good enough, add a basic Miele Olympus canister to clean bare floors and above the floor. If you want a canister with a longer cord and bigger bag, get the suction only version of the new Sebo D4. In Canada it's available in cappucino colour!

TriStar CXL does fine; but at least it gets the deep-down dirt no other vacuum can touch

Well...

I'd personally go with a direct air upright for such a carpet but if you really want a canister the riccar/simplciities would be a great choice or perhaps a tristar (interstate built) or tristar styled machine like the patriot would also be a good choice with a good powernozzle like a lindhaus which due to it's height adjustment would be a very good option for you.

Frieze capreting is one of the heardest to keep clean. I have a family member with about half their house frieze and it seems that not only do you need a good vacuum, but you need to vacuum very often. Once that grit gets down there it is extremely hard to get it out, no matter what vacuum you have. Stay away from the Riccar uprights, since like others have said, they have auto aujustment which is a big no-no for frieze. I second the suggestion for a Lindhuas. They have huge air channels for airflow and many height settings. There are a few high-end brands that relabel their PNs but a full on Lindhaus canister or Healthcare would be perfect.

Riccar/Simplicity Due to intorduce new Canisters

I'm holding out for the redesigned canisters from Riccar due out some time this year.
I don't know if you want to wait for whenever that may be though.

I currently own a Miele Capricorn (which I can't stand).

If you can't wait for the new Riccar's/Simplicity's coming out, I'd go with the current models offered.

Ever thought about Kirby?

For that type of carpet, only a Kirby will do. Here's why:

1 Kirby is a Direct Air machine with Airflow and Agitation that is matched by none except maybe a Royal all metal upright.

2 Kirby has the "Tech Drive" self propelled transmission which will reduce the effort to push it through dense plush carpet by 85%. The Royal and Simplicty/Riccar do not have this option.

3 You can get a fully refurbished Kirby Sentria (Kirby suggested retail price is$1398.00)for appropx. $400 which is less than half the cost of the Royal, Simplicity/Riccar machines.

4 Kirby will outlast any of the above mentioned machines by decades with only simple maintenance. (Belts, brushroll, and bags)

5 The Kirby has 7 manual height adjustments.

6 The new HEPA filteret bags will leave your home dust free and will also improve the airflow of the machine.

Sebo D4 all the way... go check one out, they offer 30 or 60 day trials. I don't think any other brand does that. Long Hose, Long Cord, Large Bags, Great Filtration, Very easy to maintain and QUIET!! The Simplicities and Riccar (same thing) are good too but noisier and heavier, a little more history of repair records though, according to dealers. Most dealers strongly recommend the SEBO and very durable over others. Upright- Sebo Felix, X4 or Riccar Supra light.

The Sebo I use at work weekly performs just fine on the high pile carpet and frieze area rug in the waiting room. Most commercial or hotel use Sebo/Windsor or Sanitaire.
