Any hints and tips on cleaning and mending Hoover ‘Plasticized’ Bags?

Hi there. I have recently aquired a Hoover Senior (Convertible in Canada and US) from the 1970’s which has a badly damaged outer bag.

If it was a cloth I could use invisible mending patches, but I am at a loss as to how to mend the tears and holes in this plasticky material.

Anyone have any ideas or experience in mending plasticised bags?

Those bags are usually vinyl bags, so anything used for repairing vinyl materials should work...

It'd be easier just to remove the bag to preserve it and fit it with a generic replacement bag (especially a cloth one as it'll breathe a lot better than the vinyl bags)...

Also, if your senior uses the open-ended bags (that use a spring or Junior belt to hold them in place) and you want to improve your Senior's performance, get yourself some Electrolux Boss/Widetrack bags (See link below) and cut off the card plate, and attach as per regular Hoover bags, I use these in my Junior and boy do they improve it's performance!!!

Perforated Vinyl-For many aspects the Vinyl used in Hoover and some Eureka Vinyl bags is similar to perforated white vinyl used in cinema projection screens-what happens when to perforate any material-its WEAKENED isn't it-so the perforated vinyl has to be handled carefully to prevent tears.the screen has to be perforated so the sound from the speakers can get thru it.

I guess it's one that looks like it's made of plasticised cotton? If I were in your position, I'd use gaffer (duct) tape on the inside of the bag, or a similarly strong sticky backed plastic! Making sure that the surface is as clean as possible, of course.

I'd definitely avoid using glue to hold any reinforcement onto the bag, in case in penetrates through to the outside of the bag and disfigures it!

David, I've tried Oreck bags on one of my Juniors, and I definitely agree it improves performance when quite new, but it also seemed to clog up more quickly. Not really an issue if one is used to smaller modern vacuum dust capacities, but not so good if one is a slovenly bag changer like myself! Plus you can'r reuse them, though I tried... I know some folks have tried Kirby bags too.

I'd be one of those, though they were some generic things I got from Wilkinsons (horribly expensive for 3x repackaged DoubleMicro brand ones!!!), but it's the micro lining in the bags that I have used that ensures they don't clog as quickly as standard H1 Hoover bags (or cheap replacements), obviously a bag will clog up eventually, but, before it clogs, at least the vac can breathe properly and not pick up the dust and fluff off the floor with the motor cooling fan!!!
