I went to Savers again and found a beautiful Kirby Classic III. It is in wonderful cosmetic condition. The previous owner put on a mini emptor, so it uses disposable bags. It even came with attachments and the shag king. Other non-original parts are the handle and bag of course. It has the later Legend II bag on it. When I plugged it in the motor didn't sound right. It sounds like something was holding it back from running full power. Now I have this and the 510 to work on this summer.

You may want to inspect the armature, field or carbon brushes if you think the motor is running slower than it should.

Also, check the Rug Nozzle. The Suction Relief Vent may be in the open position, so if it is, it should be closed and maybe you may get more power.

I spun the fan with the nozzle off and it wouldn't spin freely. I assume that the bearings are in need of grease. How do I pull it out of the motor?

To remove the fan from a Kirby Classic III you will need to insert a special fan locking tool or an ice pick in the slot. Use that tool to keep the rest of the motor armature from spinning while you attempt to remove the fan. As the fan is screwed on in reverse, with the fan locking tool or ice pick in place, turn the fan clockwise to remove it.

Until I find actual service procedures for the CIII, here is one for the Heritage II.
