Here's something you don't see every day...A completely original GE Roll Easy R1. I haven't fully unboxed it yet, but this vacuum is inventoried and all there. I have had this for over three years in the box it came in and finally decided to play with it tonight!
It's in incredible condition, I really am excited to finally blow the dust off it and bring it to life again! The motor sounds awesome and suction at hose end is really good too. My kids can't figure out what it is at the moment!
Way back in 1958, I was about to attend the Nyack boys school in Nyack, New York, and after a tour of the school where the headmaster spoke to both my mother and grandmother, but completely ignored me, he finally addressed me and asked "is there anything you want to know?" "Yes" I said, "what kind of vacuum cleaner do you use?" The headmaster seemed a bit shaken by this question, after all, why should a young boy be asking bout vacuum cleaners? So he shook his head and took us to a room, here he opened a closet door. There was a brand new G.E. Roll-Easy! Sad to say I never got to use it, but it went onto the 'must have' list in my mind. And in 1994, that dream came true when I added the one shown here to my collection.
The Roll-Easy's are great machines and I plan to put mine to work in the near future.
While I don't have the attachments to go with the Roll-Easy, I do have a set of wands for other G.E.'s, but they have the red tabs, I also have a set in brown, you're welcome to them both.
I have always wondered: the user of the GE Roll Easy was supposed to be able to drag it up a flight of stairs without having to lift it. But, how did one take it down a flight of stairs?
Look at the picture of this wonderful machine. As you see there are two ports, one where the hose goes. In the other you insert the curved wand and simply roll it up and down stairs. Of course there's also a carying handle to simply lift the motor unit the old fashioned way.
I did not see the smaller carry handle on the older versions. I guess that is the only way you could safely take it down a flight of stairs.
I can't believe the latch holding the wand in the steering hole would be strong enough to actually lift it off the ground or prevent it from bouncing down a full flight of stairs. I don't think you would be able to safely roll it downward over stair treads by holding it with the wand in the steering hole. You'd have to carry it the old-fashioned way, methinks.
