Aerus/Electrolux uprights

Hey all, I've been curious lately to learn a bit more about Aerus/ Electrolux uprights which I haven't paid much attention to until now..

There's quite a bit of talk about the Lux Guardian Platinum and older Electrolux canisters, but I don't think I've heard all too much about their uprights. I'd be curious to hear what your experiences are, especially with the Lux Guardian model, but any model (Discovery, Epic etc) is appreciated.

Some main questions:

How would you rate cleaning capability versus the canisters, especially the LGP?

Are there any major differences between the older and newer machines?

Are hepa bags available?

Get one you will love it

I own an Eelctrolux Discovery 2 upright and i love it gave it a spa day runs like new now .Got it in a yard sale for 20$.Cleans well grooms the carpet well suction is adequate good for small job and my rugs around the house i love it .
Ialso own an Electrolux AP200 canister whit a vinyl hose works great love it so much got it for 40$.My Discovery 2 works better i put a new bag and motor filter seems suction is up now fora light weight upright by lux cant complain a true work horse get one youll love it the hose it came whit is nice to have .

The current Lux Guardian Upright has a stronger motor than the previous generations’ uprights. It comes with an electric hose and a side kick, as well as 2 wands, crevice tool, combo dusting/upholstery tool. I know it cleans better than the older Epic canisters. I’ve not yet got to use a Platinum so I can’t answer for that. The Guardian Upright does groom the carpet very nicely and is lighter than most full sized uprights. It also is not very loud in comparison. I’ve used a 20 foot extension hose on mine and still had impressive airflow and pick up. You can get aftermarket HEPA bags on Amazon. The brand of bags I got is DVC.

The Aerus/Electrolux uprights are very good in my opinion (for carpet cleaning primarily). I found an older Epic model a year or so ago at a thrift store for $10, that was about as dirty as I'd seen any vacuum. Whoever used it never bothered to check the bag and continued to vacuum, overfilling the bag all the way back to the brush roll. Amazingly, it appeared to continue to pick up dirt despite this. I cleaned it all up and it worked really well on carpet. I eventually sold it. I never found the Electrolux uprights easy to use on hard surface floors like wood, linoleum, tile. They seemed a bit cumbersome to me in that respect. They excelled on carpet though and their large "U" dust bags hold a lot of dirt. The older versions like the Epic and Discovery models are exceptionally well made. I never had the add on electric hose or attachments, so I cannot speak about those aspects.

It’s the coolest looking vacuum! I really like it. You’ll be happy if you get one. It’s got the power you’ll need to keep your home clean, especially if you have a lot of carpet or rugs.

I've got three Electrolux uprights--a Discovery Plus, a Discovery II and a Genesis LXe. The Discovery Plus I found at a thrift shop a couple of years ago for $25. It's essentially the same as a Discovery II but with onboard tool storage. It didn't have any tools with it but I pieced together a set and found it very ungainly with all the tools onboard so I relegated it to my barn.

Last summer, I rescued the Discovery II from the curb. It had its hose with it but no other accessories. A few days later, I lucked up on a Sidekick adapter kit for a Discovery III and was pleased to find that everything fit the Discovery II. I use this machine weekly to sweep up cat litter when I change the cats' litter pan and it works great on the vinyl floor and on the bathmats. The only thing is performance goes down quickly once the bag gets about a third full of cat litter.

The Genesis LXe was a lucky $8 thrift shop find. It had the recalled cord configuration on which the cord stuck out the end of the handle. Mine was in great condition, but I went ahead and got it repaired for free anyway. Shortly after I got it, I snagged a complete toolkit for it, including a Sidekick, hose, wands, crevice tool and combo dusting brush and upholstery tool. I honestly have to say I much prefer having the tools stored on a caddy than aboard the machine itself.

To answer you're first question about the uprights versus the canisters. For the suction motors, the canisters are actually better. The reason is by looking at the actual size of the motors, the canister motors are larger than the upright motors and they are much more powerful. Other than that, the brushrolls and the PN motors are basically the same.

@ human, you've definitely found some good deals there. I agree, I like the way these machines look without having the tools on board. It even cuts down on the weight and some people just don't use tools regularly enough.

@panasonic, thanks I didn't know that. I was thinking that the suction motors were esentially the same as with the canisters (wih exception to the lux guardian platinum) However the brushroll motor on the latest model sounds a little quieter versus earlier models.

Every time I see that Lux Guardian upright I really wish Aerus had incorporated stainless steel into the design. It looks OK as it is, but it would have really looked awesome if they had put stainless steel plating on the body where the white is.

I don't know about the household version of Aerus (Electrolux LLC) uprights, but my Lux Commercial with the JEI motor does pretty well. The other one, with the Electrolux motor is ok, but definitely lacking in performance. In addition, neither SPI (system performance indicator) for full bag functions as it's supposed to, so I have to pull out the bags and check them myself; as they fill, it's harder to do.

I wouldn't rate either as a dirt digger, but for surface and just under surface cleaning they perform satisfactorily.
