The best configuration I found is a floor nozzle that has a full width suction channel in the front, combined with a microfibre mopping pad behind it.  The cordless  Swiffer Vac has this kind of set up using disposable Swiffer cloths.  But you can get a similar configuration on bare floor tools from Tacony, Shark and Filter Queen.

If you don’t necessarily need a microfibre pad, I found the two best bare floor brushes were from Hoover and Panasonic in the 1990’s - these had a single bristle strip along the centre of the nozzle which allowed for full width pick up on the forward stroke as well as the back stroke.  Kenmore Progressives and Whispertones also had this kind of floor brush.
