I am shopping for a carpet steam cleaner/extractor and have been primarily interested in the Rug Doctor Deep Carpet Cleaner model 93146 and the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro model 1986.

From the many reviews I have read, most people seem to rave about the Rug Doctor's overall cleaning performance (and many home YouTube videos appear to affirm this) but a fair number have complained that either the water stopped spraying over time or that the machine leaked water all over the floor when using the hose! Meanwhile, while reviewers of the Bissell do not complain of issues like this and have reported generally good results, the unit does not get the same raving reviews as the Rug Doctor in regards to carpet cleaning and gets mixed reviews for upholstery cleaning.

What are your experiences with these two machines, and are there any other models I should look at?

It seems like there aren't that many highly rated cleaners out there other than the Bissell 86T3 and Rug Doctor X3.

Hmm

I have a Bissell proheat 2x and a Bissell proheat we haven't opened it yet.
The Bissell proheat 2x is better than our unopened one and the rug Doctor.
That's my opinion. The rug Doctor in last five years fell off a cliff.
The ph2x has a hose attachment for furniture.
I would not get rug Doctor.
I'd get Bissell proheat 2x, Bissell green clean machine or royal version.
I'd stick with those 3 go read reviews of pros and cons of each one and it will help you decide. If you look just do a quick glance at ratings for rug Doctor.

@lesinutah trust me after years of working as a technician, I would never recommend the spaghetti monster known as the ProHeat 2X to any human being.
literally was statement from Bissell was there were designed to last 8 working hours. Here's a picture of the inside maybe I'll think twice about that.

Rug Doctor has two lines of product. The current red line of product is absolutely trash and was designed to be so.
The blue lined of product which is 1 extractor are excellent machines both and cleaning serviceability and longevity.

I'd second here

I also wouldn't recommend the Proheat 2X. I've repaired so many of them and I even own one myself as well. They're one of my least favorites to tear apart especially if it's just a clogged pump. They also feel really cheap and they're one of the worst I've ever used to suck up water off the carpets. The last time I used mine took alot longer to dry the carpets up which is one of the reasons why I don't use it anymore.

I agree with the others

Just in case someone is looking to buy a newer carpet cleaner, it's best to never trust reviews made by brand new owners who are raving about how great it is after using it 1 or 2 times. Many times they only work for a few times before major headaches start.

Now that a few years have passed everyone found out that rug doctor has produced complete garbage! Not only is it far too big and hard to use (only able to be used while pulling it back toward you and needs to be picked up to go back over the same spot) youll never be able to see if you are picking up any water or how dirty it is since you ant even see the water moving through the inlet! If you are able to get passed these most important features (that all other cleaners make a point to make sure it's very visable knowing the importance), you'll find that they purposely use pumps that are only partially water RESISTANT! Meaning your pump is made to fail after a very short time. They know this and they made sure to use it. If that's not enough, the tanks will start leaking no matter how carefully you are. The clean water tank is not properly vented which creates suction as the water is sucked out of it, it wlll cavitate the pump and can crack the tank. The dirty tank will leak at the seam where it's glued together. It just a little bit but all along the entire length of the glue joint. Best way to see this is to put clean water in the dirty tank and run it. You'll see big bubbles forming and rising from the bottom seam.

Bissell is just as baby ug you can add belts breaking to the list. Bissells will last about 6 uses before you see problems.

Hover used to be the best hg has found out that their competition is so bad that they joined the club with poorly made brittle plastics. Junk, every one, buy an old Hoover and be happy you saved $200!
