Dyson has just unveiled their "Ball 2" upright line, and in Dyson tradition, the US gets their flagship uprights first. They're a colorful update to the DC40 and DC41, which debuted 6 years ago.

Their newest version of the DC40, now named Ball Multifloor 2 (taking the name of the outgoing larger model), does appear to be improved, solely (finally!) thanks to an updated cleaner head. The new brushbar is wider, and appears to be more aggressive. It looks to be a significant improvement over the very wimpy US DC40, and Dyson Light Ball uprights. Aside from a super cool throwback color palette, and an updated crevice tool, little else has changed.

I'm struggling to see what justifies the earned "2" in the name of the new Animal model. The larger Ball Animal 2 looks essentially like a re-badge of the current Ball Multifloor that it's replacing. They updated the crevice tool, but kept the horrible stock upholstery tool. The supposedly "re-engineered" brushbar looks practically identical (still a single-row of "gappy" bristles), and will still hold back the machine's potential on carpeting. The excellent self-cleaning shroud on their new canisters and handhelds is absent. The machine it replaces is actually quite a fun and competent machine (versatile and fantastic on bare floors), but riddled with obvious flaws.

Perhaps worst of all, 6 years ongoing, they still haven't addressed the critical flaw in their current upright line: A little bit of dirt cross-contaminates the clean air path, every time you empty the bin (which then gets pulled through the motor). Why have the very best filtration system, if you don't bother to let the product utilizing it benefit from it? That's just bad engineering!

These look like a stop-gap. Something very interesting is likely around the corner, but I expect more from the appliance industry's most eagerly innovative company.

I was told by a Dyson rep on the phone the Animal 2 is essentially the same as the current ball animal. The Multifloor 2 is very different in that it has the same suction power as the older DC65 at a lighter weight. If they keep the price down it might be a hit.

We do not get the Dc41 here, but we do get the dc42 which is the smaller Dc40 in your market. They gave us an upgraded model about a year ago with a great cleaner head, despite having only a single brush strip on the roll it sticks to the carpet like glue. In fact there is this one rug in our home that due to its thickness is difficult to vacuum. In fact none of my Kirby's with new brush rolls or my Royals will lift the carpet pile.
The only vacuums that lift the pile are the new Dc42 Erp and a handful of my Hoovers, Concept 1, USA Hoover Air Steerable (Our Hoover Air being a Vax has too soft a brush roll) and all my wind tunnels.

DC40 in the Dyson lineup

The DC40 is considered mid range here for Dyson with the Dyson Ball (DC65) being the suction king. I suspect the improvements are more so refinements, such as making it easier to put the handle back up instead of it falling down and probably more sturdy parts.

I have a couple of Miele U1/S7's and a Sebo Felix in addition to a Dyson Cinectic and I must say the Dyson is not too bad when it comes to pickup and handling. It's just that right now I am more into bagged Vacs.

Looks nice....

Not sure what model they made that they used a regular flat computer cabling to the power head that was situated where it would get repeatedly flexed. So it broke cutting power to the power head motor.

With the new design, looking at there the body meets the power head unit, makes me wonder:will it be reparable by parts or by having to buy entire "modules". The "Module" concept brings great profits to companies.

That was the dc18 that had the exposed wiring , by exposed you could see it when the head was down. The dc25 also had a similar issue but not to the same extent.

One thing I have always liked about dyson is that as a repair shop you can buy most of the bits a pieces instead of replacing entire modules making the repair more cost effective but that as a consumer the modules ie cleaner head are available complete so you can also by pass the repair company and just replace it yourself

Yes I said if it had washable filters or not (Both pre and post filters). I hated how dyson decided not to put in both pre and post washable filters on the Cinetic models.

Yes it does have the washable filters just like the older Ball Animal & Multi-floor models.

They just hit Amazon so I suspect we will have an unboxing and demo by someone in a week or two. I might just buy one in a year or so when Dyson sells them as refurbs for less than half. At that point, it would be only for backup. Particularly the Multifloor which is as light as a DC40 but with the suction of the older DC65, along with having the newer powerhead.
