Hover convertible model 719

Ok i just recently obtained my grandma's old hoover. It was loaned to a friend and we just got it back. It has been 14 years since we have seen it. I have two questions, the first is, does any one know who can repaint this so it looks better, and does a good job. The second is was this model supposed to be two toned like this. I am posting a pic with this message.

This is an all original model 719. It was built from Dec. 1968 to November 1971. It was a "B" line cleaner as the 1070 was the top of the line Convertible. This is one of my favorite machines as it is the one that I grew up with. I wish that I had my mom's cleaner. This one was a gift from Mike Rogers a few years back. It was a trade.

The colors were seal griege light for the handle, bail, and base. Delft Blue was used for the bumper, hood, bag, and handle grip. Seal Griege medium was used for the cord. There are several variations on this model which I won't get into.

Looks like you have your work cut out for you! The closest thing to the original paint is Appliance Epoxy in Almond. Just remove the hood and tape off what you don't want painted. Of course the most important part is to clean and sand the base first. You have the bag which usually fell apart. So this is a good thing! I have a junk 719 that you could steal the bumper from. I may even have a hood somewhere that is decent.

I have been told (I have never actually tried it) that you can take say the handle to a auto paint store and have it matched. They will then put it in a spray can for you to use. I know that it is pricey, but at least you could match the original color.

Let us all know what you decide to do with your gram's old Convertible! I am sure that if your grandma kept it, that she would have taken much better care of it. This poor thing has seen a very TROUBLED life indeed. Take good care of it!

Alright. So who in the heck painted my hoover opposites? Well i have stuff that will take the white off of the top, now I just need to find the right shade of white, and a blue bumper that goes all the way around.Thanks for the help!

719 is a good machine. its one of the best hoovers that i've used...does a great job on the carpet. however it was surprising to me how heavy it is. my other favorite hoovers for cleaning are the celebrity, concept I-II, and the daddy of them all.......the conquest! The conquest will suck ANYTHING up!

I will admit, this thing does a great job, it is just a bigger version of the Junior if you ask me, But i am wondering, what year was this made?

Refurbish

Ok. I have taken a few steps to start the process of brining back the glamor of this machine. I took the white paint off of the hood, and I sanded down, and painted the base, to the original off white.

Here is the chassis. It is a little too light, but better than the nasty blue that was there.

wow, im impressed at how quickly you tackled this one.

i noticed you asked something about a Junior on another thread and i remembered what it was like when i was afraid to take Hoovers apart. a machine like this one would be a perfect dissection machine.

i dont have unlimited funds to spend on service so i had to teach myself how to lube and service these machines. after i had lubed a couple of Hoovers, it was a breeze.

there was a Hoover service demo at the last gathering, and im sure there will be more at this years meeting. you should think of attending.

Ok! I have put the final coat of gloss on! Now all i have to do is wait over night, and....Fin! The machine will look original! I will put up pics tomorrow!

Alright! I have finished the paint and reassembly. I still need my bumper guard and rear axle, due to arrive here in a couple of days. So here it is!

Up here in Canada the Model 719 was called the 716. It's a 2 speed with one piece handle and a 'pinker' cord. Here's mine with the converter & hose, many thanks to Tom Anderson. Have I got that info correct, Tom?

Earlier pic shows the color better. The base is pretty banged up so I added the 'vintage' Smith Vacuums of London Ontario shop label to cover a partcularly nasty scrape in front of the lamp.

Seeing your fine work I'll seriously consider repainting the base & handle some day.

Yes, you have the correct info as far as I know. I like the one piece handle. They do not "creak" like the two piece handles.

The 716 looks like it will clean up very nicely! I am so glad the machine was repairable as well, and thanks to Tom Anderson for parts! I really do appreciate it! I love this vac, and will cherish it all my life! I grew up with this vac, so it means alot to me!
