Vacuum cleaner maintenance for Kirby

Dear All,

As you may know, I recently got a Kirby G6 and I LOVE it so very much. She's been asleep since Sunday but I have read the manual a couple times with interest. After reading it, I've come up with a couple questions and thought you vacuum gods might help me.

1. How often do I need to change the belt?

2. I've heard of people washing their bag and while I don't need that, it might happen. Do you simply replace the bag with a new Kirby G6 bag, wash it in my front load washer or not worry about it.

3. Do you take your Kirbys to your local dealer for a yearly checkup?

Is there anything in regard to maintenance that I'm missing? I'll watch the bad to ensure the bag only fills 1/2 way.

Hi Matt,

You only need to change the belt when the L.E.D starts to flicker when it is dropped to the correct hight for the type of flooring you are cleaning.

Or If you want you can change it every 6 month.Depending on usage.

You can wash the outer kirby Gsix bag in the washer at a low temp like 40c
If your using genuine kirby bags it should not need doing to often at all.

I don't take my kirby's for yearly check ups I do it myself.
Just keep your brush roll clear of lint, Check bag reg, Belt every so often. Check the level of the brush roll bristle are set at the correct hight not to low or to high if worn.
every few years check your carbons and just genrally look after it.

Good advice, the newer style Kirby belt seems to last much longer than the older style. With the Micron Magic bags, I have never even had dust on the fill tube inside my machine, when I change the bag, I take a damp cloth and wipe down the fill tube, perhaps even take another vacuum and dust out the inside and outside of the bag. Other than than that, I may polish the metal with Mothers Mag.

Kirby care

One thing I do with my Kirbys is to store them with the rug nozzle removed and the belt released. Doing that, I found the belt keeps its strength for ages.

I do make sure any threads are removed from the brush roll before storing.

With filtrete bags I have never had to clean the outer bag.

Thanks all. I have used it twice and it cleans amazingly well!! I am wondering why in the world people would take and purchase a new vacuum when a good used Kirby would be the only machine they'd every need or use.

Thoughts? Have we really come full circle and are so disposable that everything now is that way and people think that way too. I'm beginning to believe that.

G6 Rules

Hi Matt Just wondering how you are enjoying your Kirby. With care you will do fine no need to really ever wash the bag i have a g3,4,5, never had to wash any of the bags. What i no you should do every six to eight weeks is take the brush roll out and clean all the hair etc that collects. Ok Matt take care Doug

I did this sometimes. Put on the upolstery tool and simply vacuum the outer bag thats if you dont use fitrate. Just something I do.

Hellga really sucks!

Hey all, I am really enjoying my Kirby G6. This weekend, I pulled all the parts off of her and started buffing her up with some very fine steel wool and my car buffer. It's such a sharp machine and I love the gun metal gray/black against the silver...very sexy and chic...LOL.

But what I cannot get over is that it cleans better than anything I've seen in the past. In fact, I think it's time to put a new bag in as it's nearly 1/2 full. I cannot believe the dirt that was hiding in my carpet, floors, ceilings and everywhere. Troy told me he's never seen the carpets looking better than ever.

After each use, I clean the brush roll out...however I have two questions that need some answers to match:

1. The carpet I have always sheds a lot of fuzz. This has been an issue with my X's Dyson and my 10 year old Kenmore canister. I noticed there is a good bit of fuzz mixed with my Beagle's hair around the belt lifting finger (don't know what's that's called). I take my fingers in and pull as much as out. However, how can I get it all out. I'm very careful not to do any damage to both the belt and the knob as well as the brush roll. How can I full clean that?

2. Sometimes, and this is very very very rare, but when I pull Hellga back whether it is slow or medium speed, it jumps a little. It happens rarely, but I have the feeling I'm not doing something right. It's not transmission wise, because I can feel it at the front of the cleaner. Is my brush roll to far down? Am I doing something wrong.

Otherwise, I'm very very happy with my purchase and am looking for an older Kirby to restore too! I'll post pictures of Hellga when she's all buffed!
