Opinions on the Miele S2111?

After having a good clear out of my Vacuums I am now pondering on whether to buy a Miele or not. Like the Hoover Jazz it would be for daily to a few times a week use but to alternate against other Vacuums I might come across. It is currently 109.99 pounds (pound sign not working) in Argos which I think is a good Price for a Miele Vacuum. Most of the reviews say it's good but one puts me off by saying the Carbon Brushes go after 2 years but I thought they had a 20 year expectancy life & a guarantee.

Any opinions on it would be great, it is my first Miele & I will be glad to hear your responses.

See my review if you wish.

The problem I find with the S2111 is that whilst it looks reasonably modern, it isn't as well built as either the outgoing S4000 range or the present S6000 range.

Frankly I don't think you need to worry about "carbon brushes," but rather for the fact that the Miele S2 comes with a shorter hose as standard and as my review reflects, fixed height suction tubes, short 5.5 metre power cord though Miele's S2131 series now has telescopic tubes as standard.

Personally if it was me, I'd look for a Miele S5211. That's a quality vacuum cleaner. I have one and adore it. Or the SEBO K1 Airbelt.

Thank you sebo_fan, as you say in your review that the S2111 is designed for first time Miele buyers & that is me. I have only researched this model so far though but might end up going for the S5281 which I really like the shape of.

My Dad has the S2111. The main reason he chose that is because of how light it is - it's seriously like a little carrier bag. His partner had an accident a few years ago and she isn't very stable on her feet as a result, so the s2 is perfect.

It takes the GN bags, so the capacity isn't compromised. The build quality of the machine is not as good as higher end Miele's, but it's still a fantastic cleaner and is recommended it over many other cleaners in that price range.

End of the day though, Hi-Lo, when I state in my reviews that something is ideal as a "first time" buyer's choice such as the Miele S2111, I don't count collectors as being the average buyer! I think you probably know that by now.

There's a big difference as you know, between the average buyer and the vacuum cleaner collector. I know from experience that when I've sold other vacuums in the past that a lot of the buyers or owners I've kept in touch with don't keep their machines as well maintained.

The person who bought the S2111 eventually broke the all plastic floor head - now replaced by an older floor head with a much better build I had from an old S4.

I don't know your height but I find the fixed tubes to be really annoying. At least with the base level Miele S5211 you get telescopic tubes anyway.

Hi sebo_fan, I meant I was the first time buyer of premium branded Vacuums as I only tend to have Vacuums by Vax & Hoover which I wouldn't call premium unlike Miele or Siemens/Bosch.

By the way I am 6ft.

Turbo500, thank you. I am not after weight but it's good to know that someone whos not steady on their feet can use it.

I have the S 2 series Titan, I think? it is light weight and easy to move around. If my back or hip is mad, its an easy go to. Yes, short cord and hose.Cat loves the sound, likes to be cleaned with it

Oh well, HiLo if you're 6ft like I am, then using the Miele S2111 may give you enough stretch by the fixed height suction tubes alone. Personally as my review shows, I'm not that keen on the short mains cord AND having to put up with the shorter 1.5 metre hose with those long poles, too.

At the time of purchase Hoover's TeliosPlus had not appeared on the market and I note that it, too has a 1.5 metre hose. Compromising over that and the cord length are two pet hates of mine on cylinder vacuums. However the Telios fights back because its relatively cheaper than the Miele and offers tool storage on board plus has HEPA as standard and those all important telescopic tubes.

Nope. This is why the original Miele S2110 was given the added SFS 10 tube extender attachment. Now Miele have taken that away so that the S2 sits at the starter range of the Miele cylinder vac family.

All the other cylinder vacs have 1.8 metres including the outgoing S5000 series and the S4000 smaller FJM bag style (predecessor to the S6/S6000) vacs.

The S2131 and S2111 both take GN style bags, which are the largest capacity bags that Miele cylinders have.

I will warn you though, if you get a Miele, make sure you use genuine Miele bags as some of the cheaper knock off bags have been know to ruin the machine complete by warping the sides of the bag door, meaning the bag cover won't open/close.

The S2000 ranges are all the same but for different tools, HiLo. As I originally mentioned, the S2131 has telescopic tubes but you'll still get the 1.5 metre hose. I note that Argos have completely faffed up the spec list on their sales post of the S2131 though - it suggests that it has a 1.8 metre hose AND multicyclonic technology - proof that Argos do get it wrong, sometimes.

Generally if the Miele S2 has been quoted with a 9m travel radius, this suggests the short cord and hose in my experience - the "standard" radius of 11 metres that usually quotes with Miele specs suggests the 6.5 metre cord and the standard 1.8 metre hose with telescopic suction tubes.

AO.com also appear to list the cord length wrong at 7 metres, whilst QVC is a bit more truthful:

Also does the S2111/S2131 use the filters out of the Dust Bag box or can they use the Block Style Filters that the higher end models use? Thanks.

Hi HiLo

Yes I clicked on that link. The S700 is similar to the Miele S371/S381 but with a selected pre-set suction control dial compared to continuous dial on the S300 range however the S700 is a heavy old thing and it doesn't have the Comfort cord rewind as standard as that is a feature on the more modern S6 and S8 series. Miele UK as usual have that listed wrongly as they have done with other features (cue the post earlier in the year when they showed an S8 with a power nozzle head that isn't available in the UK)

The S2000 range uses the same filters that the S7000 uprights can use, so the code for the Active Air Clean block is SF-AAC-30 and the HEPA filter is SF-AH-30 though don't waste your money on the HEPA filter as it is far too expensive and the AAC filter does the same job.

Don't forget you get a free Super Air Clean filter which is designed to last per 4 bags in a box and you get 2 free, one for the exhaust motor at the front and another behind the bag which is cut to fit.

Review on Dooyoo about the S381

No not really - and it uses the smaller FJM 3.5/4 litre dust bag. Best to concentrate on the S2000 if you want a light and powerful vacuum to use with the bigger GN dust bag. Or go for the slightly heavier S5000 series - all S5000 models have three tools that hideaway under a flap on the main body and also uses the GN dust bag. The S2000 has an external clip on tool holder.

The white Miele Argos are selling (S5281) at £169 is a bit of a bargain as Miele sell it for £200, whilst there's an orange/red S5211 for £160 direct from Miele that includes the special LED light on the handle. However it only comes with the Super Air Clean filter. I suppose you can upgrade in time - thats the beauty of Miele - and that headlight handle is ultra rare to find as it is not part of the tools available from Miele UK.
