who know about a regina electrikbroom?

I picked this up at a thrift shop for $3 today. Its a Regina ElectrikBroom 3 speed. The motor was a bit dry when I bought it so I tore it apart and lubed it. Seems to work OK. I get the feeling if I washed the cloth bag it would have alot more suction. Does anybody know how to remove the bag? Also, how old are these, I hear they are from the 60's

The Regina Electrikbroom was introduced in 1945 and continued in the above design (albeit with numerous cosmetic changes and various features added over the years) until 1992, when it was completely redesigned as a hardbody cleaner which used disposable bags. That incarnation continued until the early 2000s.

I'm not certain how you would remove the cloth bag, but, given the cleaner's age, I would be wary of washing the bag. If you have a full-size vacuum cleaner with a hose and crevice tool, you could vacuum the bag inside and out. Perhaps that may be all that is necessary to restore its suction.

I couldnt detach the bag so I hosed out the inside in the tub, taking care to keep water where it should be. I didnt use soap because I worry about the dye bleeding but its clean now. just waiting for it to dry now. Im not sure how common or uncommon these are, I just saw it was a regina and grabbed it.

That model you have there is a 1978. This is the first year that the motor housing went over to plastic switching from 2 fan housing screws to 4. The same basic two piece motor with the armature being separate from the field coil was used right from the beginning but this changed over in 1979 to an all in one GS electric motor. The bag is easily removed from the cleaner by unscrewing the top white plastic retainer piece which will separate from the middle portion. You then just slide this off the cord. Next go to the bottom of the bag on the back side and you will see a small screw back there that connects the skinny white metal band which holds the lower portion to the base. Remove the screw with a pair of pliers very carefully and using a screw driver gently pry the bag off the plastic retainer assembly. The bag will now slide right off just like the top screw on retainer. I have washed loads of these bags with the fells naphtha soap with excellent results but be sure to turn the bag inside out first and vacuum the loose dirt. Keep the bag inside out and rub the soap up and down the entire bag. Using a bristle brush gently scrub the bag back and forth working up and down until you see the dirty brown start to look lighter. Wash out all the remaining soap and dirt several times and them let the bag air dry over night. Do not dry the bag in the dryer as it will shrink causing problems when it comes time to re-install the bag. That's it. When fully dry you will notice nearly twice the suction and lots more air flow. When fully gone through these brooms have very good air flow and have fantastic pick up capability.

I cannot for the life of me get the top to unscrew, thats why I asked because I thought maybe it didnt come apart.

I have an 80's PowerTeam ElectrikBroom which is the power nozzle model. I took the bag off as was described previously by unscrewing the top. Washed it inside out in the bathtub with great results. I have always had a soft spot for the ElectrikBroom. Happy vacuuming!

im not sure what I'm doin wrong, mine will just not unscrew. I even tried pliers

hold the bag tight and just unscrew the wide top peice like a jar lid. It will unscrew from the smaller very top part. Make sure you hold bag tight so it doesnt twist with it

Thank you!! I didnt try holding the bag, I just tried holding the inner ring. The bag seems oretty snug up there, does it just slip off? or does it like screw off the threads?

The clamp at the bottom is holding tension on the bag, so once you loosen the clamp you can slide the bag upwards over the handle and cord. Mark

My Electrikbroom.

Joel gave great advice on how to wash and clean the bag. I got great results by following his directions. My cleaner is REALLY loud. I think it needs greasing/oiling, but I don't want to mess it up either. Any suggestions on what type of lubricant to use and how to oil it?

Here are a few pics on how to remove the threaded bag cover. Just feel around the very top portion of the bag by sliding your fingers all around until you find the two nubs that are inside the bag. These make a great hold while you unscrew the cover as shown.

Note that the upp er portion of the bag is just sitting on the spring loaded retainer. Once the lower white metal strap is removed the bag simply lifts right off the handle and cord.

I believe it is held on by a clamp at the motor and or screws, and the top has that cap as shown. However, from what I remember when I tried to remove my bag, the only way to get the bag off the machine would be to remove the handle grip/switch, which would require unsoldering the wire connections or snipping them and then splicing for reassembly, something I didn't want to bother with either way.

Removing the bag

If you check out the first picture posted by Nick take a look at the very bottom of the bag right above the white plastic lip. There is a skinny white metal band that goes around the entire bag bottom. On the back side is a small screw that holds the band in place. Remove the screw and then gently pry the bag off. You do not have to remove the cord and switch or handle to get the bag off if you don't want to. Depending on the decade in which your broom was made any 1979 or older model can have the switch and cord easily removed from the cleaner to get the bag off easier. All you have to do is remove the tiny screw on the lower side of the switch plate, pop the switch off which will reveal wires with three twist connectors. Simply untwist the two wire connectors coming out of the handle and the entire switch and cord will come away from the broom. If you don't want to do this simply slide the bag up and off the upper handle and through the entire cord. Note- you may want to have another vacuum handy when doing this as there will be dust bunnies hiding in the upper portion of the bag dropping all over the place.
