What is everyone's opinion regarding refurbished vacuum cleaners? If you are "pro" refurbished,where should I look to find them? And how can I tell if they're done correctly?

Details I'm interested in superb suction, able to get dirt and hair out of carpet. Something that transitions to non carpeted area easily. Able to use attachments easily and quickly. Under $500 preferably.
