What's your opinion on customizing old vac's?

As long as it's not irreversible. Or like it's been mentioned, if the machine was in such a poor shape to begin with that an irreversible modification is the only way to preserve it, then yeah. Or if it's some kind of machine that there's already a million of them out there still. Granted that...

    Hoover Concept Power Surge Wiring

The grease may burn a bit, I doubt you would smell it. A noticeable spark means the switch probably has a problem. Make sure it's fully engaged to one position or the other. If it's an old switch, it's possible it has arced many times and burnt the PCB material the bottom of the switch is made...

    Shark Vacuum Fascination

Half the crowd here already collects plastic bagless vacs of, shall we say, "questionable collectablity." Why should Shark be any different? Yeah, I really don't get all the hate they get. To be fair, I just like them as usable appliances, not collector items.

Older Kenmore Canister Vac motor issues

Probably ordinary ball bearings. They can be replaced. Check the commutator to make sure it's not burned up or badly scored, that would be a deal breaker.

Just put it on craigslist and offerup for free.

    Shark Vacuum Fascination

I have noticed that some crap vacs don't have HEPA filters. On a $50 machine, I guess it makes sense. But otherwise, no. As far as I've seen, Sharks all have HEPA, or at least a filter of that type. Not sure about stick vacs though.

WOW....polishing a Kirby is a pain this arse.

Well, I suppose if you could find graded blasting media in progressively finer grit, it would work. Very dusty, though.

    Shark Vacuum Fascination

luxlife - That's everything nowadays, isn't it? I mean, aside from Kirby that hangs on to a product model for 20+ years... Bissel, Hoover, Dyson, etc. all pretty much do the same thing. Look how shiny this new model is! New bells and whistles! It's like cell phones. They change the shape and...

    Shark Vacuum Fascination

I have two Sharks, and like them quite a bit. Down to ergonomics, I would say. Just good design and ease of use. Not that I'm saying all Sharks are like this, I detest the Rotator. Big chunky thing, for no reason. And I know little of newer stick-vac type models. Granted, I didn't pay a dime...

Vintage 1920s Sturtevant Vacuum Cleaner with resistive speed control

There being two speed switches, that would make this a 4 speed then, wouldn't it?

    New tax on online sales

Taxation is theft. Maybe consider voting for people who won't do this kind of thing?

    kirby 500 series fan removal

Something better than a pick would probably be an Allen wrench or a drill bit, I'd imagine, anyway. Since they are much harder steel, and won't bend like a pick.

    Eureka Model 10 Nozzle Latch

Thingiverse is still kind of broken. I had to manually enter the url https://accounts.makerbot.com/logout and attempt to login again, and repeat that twice before it finally logged me in. Anyway, here's the link. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5403791

Yes, I will upload it to thingiverse... whenever their website stops being broken. Can't log in for some reason.

    Eureka Model 10 Nozzle Latch

I was reminded by that other Eureka thread that I've been putting off making a nozzle latch for my model 10. Having the day off (mostly), I decided to go ahead and design and print one. Of course, only now did I realize that my other, junky model 10 has a little steel plate behind the nozzle...

Do central vacuums work well for killing ants?

Pretty sure it would just relocate them to the dust collection bin. When I have ant problems I just buy a load of Raid ant bait things. The thing is with them that they take ages to work, but they really do. It poisons the whole colony, so the ants don't drop dead immediately. These days, I'm...

    1920s/30s Eureka I think

Honestly, I was just thinking about my nozzle latch. I think they were all made of pot metal and broke, because legit they're all broken. I have mine sort of jury rigged. I was thinking I'd just design and 3D print one.

    Another one off the list...

The wheel bolts are likely missing a spacer that the bolts can clamp down on, instead of clamping down on the wheels.

    royal p.a.geier co. vacuum

You might see if you can find an intermediary to buy it and ship it to you. Also don't forget you will need a BIG step-down transformer to use that in 230-volt-land.
