To the no-good rotten, rat-fink creepy, lousy EBay-er who done stole this Universal upright from me..

looks like faded maroon Yeh, that's kinda what I was thinking; that bag does look like a maroon colour that's faded. Presumably, the item on the right is an old washing machine with mangle. I have one a bit like that. Stephen

oh and thanks BTW! Thanks for your offer of help...though I'm hoping not to need any with this machine! It's interesting how you talk of the original bag being brown with gold lettering. The advert above mentions a maroon and gold-coloured colour scheme. Are you implying that the seller...

Nice picture! Nice picture Rick, the blue cylinder appears to be in excellent original nick. You're quite right in saying that, by running the prices up, we help to stop these machines ending up on landfill sites. Whilst would-be buyers end up paying more we're doing a favour for the...

It's on its way... Rick, I did indeed win the machine and it's on its way, though I missed the courier whilst at work. I'm expecting to get it on Monday. I didn't know that you were interested in it, though Charles said he'd emailed you about it. It was relisted after the seller pulled the...

    Another UK swivel top

Al, where's the badge? Al, it looks as though the plastic National badge is missing from your machine; I'm sure that mine has it...but it could be a while before it sees light of day again , since it's buried deep in the garage! That Premier could well be my Premier Junior - I know that my...

Hi Walter Yes, most machines I've seen are of the nut-on-thread variety. This machine is unusual in this respect. I believe this to be an Apex Model A3, dating from about 1922, though I'm not sure how long they were made for. As far as buffing is concerned I only spent about an hour hand...

Now for the best bit - it works! The machine runs very well..and did so from the outset, surprising even me! However I have cheated somewhat, since I can't fix the switch at present, so I've bypassed it for the time being and disconnected it. I have put the remains back inside the handle in...

It's all back! It's all back together! ..and as far as I'm concerned, well worth the wait. I've been interested in aquiring one since I saw a photo of one in a book covering models from circa 1923. This appears to have the original bag.

The motor is back together - hooray! I spent some time cleaning the parts by hand, then re-assembled the motor. A new piece of cable had to be soldered onto the cut-down Field Coil leads. Note the oil holes with the little ball bearing seals.

Oh dear! Oh dear, what shall I do with this old cable? The little bits of brown cloth-covered material are breaking up and leaving shreds of cloth everywhere!..to say nothing of the old and unusual rotary switch, which is jammed up and missing its knob. The switch is a very interesting and...

Showing Link Wire The Field Coils on this machine are connected together via a link wire in series, so the current goes through both coils before passing through the armature or vice versa.

Removing tape to check Field Coils Some black insulating tape was removed to expose a solder joint. Subsequently belling through the Field Coils confirmed that the fault was in the cable going into the motor from the handle and that the Field Coils were not open circuit - a relief!.
