Shark - amazing rise to the top of Consumer Reports

One interesting tidbit from Consumer Reports. They distribute 100 grams of dirt on the test rug. They don't provide details, but they say that tested vacuums picked up 20 to 60 grams of the dirt. So in their tests, even the best vacuums only removed 60% of the dirt (sand & wood flour mixture).

Shark - amazing rise to the top of Consumer Reports

I had always heard that Shark was junk. Yet somehow according to Consumer Reports, Shark has the highest scores for owner satisfaction among upright vacuums. Has Shark gotten better?

Rexair Rainbow trademarks SRX name - could new machine be coming very soon?

It’s too bad that they don’t unload the old models at Costco. rexair would never agree to more reasonable prices or returns.

Rexair Rainbow trademarks SRX name - could new machine be coming very soon?

I’m referring to the current model. I have no knowledge of the future model.

Rexair Rainbow trademarks SRX name - could new machine be coming very soon?

It's curious that you bring up the Carpet and Rug Institute (cRI). Yes, the Rainbow meets the Silver criteria. The Sirena meets the criteria to be gold rated. Most Riccars meet the Gold criteria. With the belt running down the middle of the power nozzle, there is huge dead space. Am I...

Rexair Rainbow trademarks SRX name - could new machine be coming very soon?

So the rumor is that there is a new Rainbow coming soon. It is public knowledge that Rainbow has trademarked the name SRX. Perhaps we can have some fun and guess what SRX stands for. SRX = sucks rexair? Perhaps we can speculate what might be coming. I certainly hope that they will have a...

    Consumer Reports

rivstg1, You mentioned legitimate complaints about the Miele U1. Would you please elaborate? I'd be curious to know more about the weaknesses of this model, because it cleans carpeting nearly as well as the Kirby in CR's tests. Thanks.

    New model rainbow

Hopefully Rainbow has addressed the poorly designed power nozzle. Based on the air flow tests that were posted by Devin (and others), the current model nozzle chokes off too much air flow. If you're going to charge nearly $3k for a vacuum, it should also clean at least as well as an $1100...

    Consumer Reports

Harley, I'm not sure if you're exaggerating, but I've never seen CR recommend a $49 vacuum. For uprights, the top rated models tend to be in the $250 to $400 range. Miele uprights have fared very well in recent rankings ($550+). In the latest ratings, there is a tie between the $300 Shark...

    Consumer Reports

To paraphrase the words of vacuum expert Tom Gasko, when you purchase a clean air upright with the ability to turn off the brush roll, you are getting the functionality of a canister vacuum.

    Consumer Reports

I have not been at all impressed with Consumer Reports (CR), and they are far from unbiased. One nice thing about user reviews on the site is that subscribers have the opportunity to take CR to task about their bad advice. There are countless user reviews in which subscribers complain about...

Very High Priced Vacuums - The Future?

I'm surprised that no state has gone after the DTD vacuums' 3-day return policy. If these products are so great, why not at a minimum a 30 day return? Somebody has got to be greasing the palms of politicians to prevent that from happening.

Very High Priced Vacuums - The Future?

So does anyone have access to sales data for these high dollar vacuums to see how they are fairing? what are the sales trends? I'd also like to know if Simplicity/Riccar sales have plummeted after relatively mediocre ratings in Consumer Reports (CR) compared to Miele which has very good...

Very High Priced Vacuums - The Future?

User reliability is a very subjective score for Consumer Reports to use. One lady wrote that her Miele upright was crap because when she used it to pick up pine tree needles (Christmas tree), the hose clogged. Obviously the vacuum was defective. A Kirby reviewer complained that the she didn't...

Very High Priced Vacuums - The Future?

I don't know how many consumers look to Consumer Reports for advice, but their new ratings are truly bizarre. CR has added two new user ratings to the scoring: "Predicted reliability (PR)" and "Owner satisfaction (OS)". The top rated Shark Navigator Powered Lift-Away NV586 has ratings of 8...

Nice score. They sure have nice attachments. Are there 2 floor brushes? What's the difference?

    Vacuum Museum in Rolla, Missouri

n0oxy, Tacony was already going down, which is likely why they made the tough decision to quit funding the museum. Consumer Reports selects vacuums to test partially by market share. There's not a single Riccar/Simplicity model tested currently. Miele and Sebo have vacuums tested. No...

Older riccar brilliance vs new Maytag m1200

Sharky, The Supralites are very good machines. The early tandem machines had some issues. The later ones were much improved. Context matters.

    Toured Riccar and Simplicity

It's truly amazing that the vacuum museum lasted so long. My memory is far from perfect, but I can remember a story on vacuumland Tom told about throwing the Riccar/Simplicity rep out of his vacuum store back in the days when he was enamored with Dysons. The Tacony guy made the mistake of...

Older riccar brilliance vs new Maytag m1200

Sharky - your comments are not an accurate portrayal of what Tom said. You have to look at context. Your first set of comments (7, 11, 18, 22, 29) are referring to the light weight Riccar and Simplicity uprights. These are very good machines that have excelled in Consumer Reports testing...
