I didn't notice that on any of the machines I worked on. How ever all the ones I had were hard wired to the motor thru the motor shell. From the diagram it looks to be used to secure the cord so that it doesn't pull the cord loose from the switch located in the upper part of the handle.

That is true it is the ultimate vacuum for collectors. Being that I am died in the wool Kirby all the way. I would love to have one of each of the renditions that lead us to what is known as the Kirby Vacuum. I just wish I had that kind of disposable cash and a proper place to display it.

I used the hose on the vacuum on a very regular basis.

It was the D50 at the time the armature wires were not glued or varnished together like they are today. There for the increase in RPM of the armature pulled the wires loose and the motor would fail.

@dysonman Yes I know I have an E series with the hepa filter and a Rexair from 1945. And they need a post filter in spite of Rexair/Rainbow's claim wet dust doesn't travel. And that is true but only if it is the right kind of "dust".

That is one down side to a water trap vacuum there are some things you would commonly find in a house the that can't be trapped by water as it doesn't absorb water fast enough to be stopped in the water like common house dust can. I'm still old school and prefer a bagged vacuum no mater what...

sounds like the timing belt powering the transmission is what is making the noise.
