Will the current vacuum industry ever change to something like it used to be?

oliveoiltinfoil ... ... you have touched on only a tiny part of a much larger and deeper problem. The one-word answer, unfortunately, is "no". Why? I can't speak for the U.K., but only for what I see here in the U.S. (which is most likely the same dynamic going on in all Western economies)...

    Sad day for me :(

OMG ... ... cut the guy a break. Divorce, even for adult children, is traumatic. I'm sure he's focused on that, but in the context of a VACUUM CLEANER forum, he wanted to share another frustration. Best wishes to you, Nick.

What Would You Be Willing To Pay if You Weren't a Collector?

There are a lot of variables ... I'm not a collector, but I just spent thousands last year on an Aerus. I appreciate quality, and I don't mind paying for it, particularly when I know in the long run I'll be paying less. That's how I am with everything. For years I held of buying "grown up"...

OMG ... ... and I forgot some of them had lighted pickup heads!

    My first stereo

OMG! I remember in 4th grade -- it was the year of "Saturday Night Fever" -- and my homeroom teacher was teaching us disco dancing during recess (in the classroom during winter months). Because she was the "cool" teacher, she managed to always requisiton the school's one and only **stereo**...

    Hey Kriby lovers ...

OK, but here's the question ... ... why do you suppose they don't like them? Presumably they were blown away by the demonstration, and most people are at some level excited about such a major purchase. I wonder what causes the "relationship" to go sour so quickly.

    Hey Kriby lovers ...

... honest question: Why do I see so many nearly-new Kirbys (with attachments that look like they've never been used) for sale on eBay, Craigslist, and on the pages here, of people posting great deals like that Kirby G5 for only $20 at a flea market or wherever? Why would people buy such an...

    My first stereo

Those classroom players ... ... were actually VERY well-built. Very little plastic, mostly-metal construction. Solid knobs. Solid electronics. VERY large oval speaker in the front.

How many of us ... ... grew up in an era where one of these was in every classroom?

    Rolaids, Please...

I wouldn't touch any of that food ... ... with a ten-foot pole. If I'm really that hungry that I can't wait to either get home or to a proper restaurant, I'll just buy a bag of nuts and/or a piece of fruit.

    My first stereo

Yep ... ... I think the Zeniths were quite underrated and eclipsed by the Pioneer and Kenwood powerhouses of the day. They were solid, very well made (still made in America), and had great sound.

    My first stereo

And since I've already gone there ... It was the summer of 1983 when I bought my first grown-up stereo component: A Zenith. 40 watts per channel. Capability of hooking up TWO turntables. Hi AND lo filters. Front mic jack! TWO ac outlets on the back panel -- one switched (for a tape deck)...

    My first stereo

My SECOND stereo ... After that Dorchester from above ... Santa surprised on Christmas morning 1980 (more like SHOCKED) me with this stereo. FULL-SIZED grown-up record changer! WITH AN 8-TRACK TAPE DECK!!!! The speakers again were deceptive -- just one four-inch full-range driver. But...

    My first stereo

Cool!!! Back in the '70s, stepping up from a "record player" to a "stereo" was a major life milestone, almost akin to becoming a man. In 1978, I saved up my grass-cutting money and bought one of these. A "Dorchester". I saw it on display at G.C. Murphy and HAD to have it. It was entirely...

    Hoover Dail A Matic Day

I think ... Electrolux, the reason you didn't see very many Dial-A-Matics was because they were so darn expensive. I also didn't see very many of them, and the ones I DID see were in the "rich" households.

    Hoover Dail A Matic Day

Well ... "I think people used to take better care of an appliance years ago, not expecting to replace it every year at a discount store with another cheap ,plastic, made in China junky vacuum." They DID. For two reasons: 1. They paid the equivalent of $926 for the Dial-A-Matic (as opposed...
