I found another way to date the old 1980s machines: their nameplates. If the nameplate on these is black and silver, then it will date to 1987 or earlier. But if the nameplate is primarily silver, with black text, then it will date to 1988 or later. ~Ben

For those of you having to use a 301291 belt on a 500 series with the old-style belt lifter, I recommend that you soak the 301291 belt in warm water, so you can stretch it out easier against the old belt lifter. ~Ben
