    Central Vacuum Retrofit Kitchen Island

I have put an inlet in the side of a cabinet several times during a retrofit where no walls were available. If the sides of your cabinet are thinner than about 3/8", you'll have to attach shims between the backside and the mounting plate in order for the inlet to sandwich the mounting plate...

    Really??

I guess it's their way of making sure they don't "leave money on the table". Having bought several machines that were initially priced (I felt) too high, I waited and often found the price lowered after some time. Also, the longer an item is for sale, the more open a seller may be to offers.

    Bad day today.

"you can lead a horse to water..." It's always frustrating to try to help somebody who isn't interested in help.

    Bissell made "Pig" predecessor

Yes indeed! Forerunner to the NSS Pig. 1910s era. The F. Bissell Co. of Toledo was no relation to Bissell of Grand Rapids, and in fact the latter sued the former to get them to change their name, after which F. Bissell became the National Super Service Company, still in business today. These...

    Holiday Inn Hoover Convertible?

Very cool! imagine finding one of these NIB, on a shelf in a storeroom of an old Holiday Inn. Stranger things have happened...

    Older wiring

QO breakers are the best in my opinion, and about the only ones I have found that actually trip near their rated amperage...makes sense as QO stands for "Quick Open". Living in Chicagoland, I am fortunate to have a home with all copper wiring in conduit. And having been built as an...

How can I cover up wall damage from a loose towel bar?

I think you may want to get a different towel bar (or reuse current), mount it a little above or below where the current one is mounted using toggle bolts, then patch the old holes and paint. Otherwise, find or make wood or metal plates/discs larger than the towel bar mounting fixtures...

What is the “What Were They Thinking?!” Product of the vacuum world?

I believe it means that if you run a Kirby with very little airflow for long enough (not sure how long it takes to happen) the fan will overheat and warp. It happens most easily on high speed, with the hose inlet blocked. The inflator nozzle only passes a few CFM...not enough to cool the fan...

    Central vacuum recommendations.

John, for your situation, I would personally go with the M715H unit. It's got fantastic end-of-hose performance and a single heavy-duty 8.4" motor with a tangential exhaust that is easy to vent outside. Here's a quick video I made looking at the unit and its motor in more detail: We...

Letting go, letting go, letting go...

Very sorry to read of your partner's passing, Charles. You've got some treasures there and no doubt they'll be easy to re-home!

(1953) General Electric Swivel Top model C1 canister vacuum.

Nice! I like those early Swivel Tops. They seem better built, more powerful, and quieter than the later squat ones. Is the other wand curved to allow you to use the floor tool at a more normal angle? I believe these would have originally come with the "flip over" rug and floor tool.

The Secret LKife Of The Vacuum Cleaner

Love this! My grandfather taped this episode first and subsequently all the others for me in the early 1990s. I watched those programs over, and over, and over. So glad they are now on YouTube! Including bits that had been cut from the episodes when PBS (I believe) aired them in the states...

Royal Commercial 662 with red shake out bag

I love this style of Royal...the red "bulb shaped" bag, the front and side cord hooks, and the way the cast headlight cowl matches the curve of the nozzle housing. This will be a great but decently quiet performer too...unlike the howling 10+ amp motors they started using a few years later...

End of an Era for Cana-Vac

The 8.4" motor fits the same bolt pattern as a 7.2" motor...but the only Trovac units that use a 7.2" motor are the HD ones with separate motor pods. Some Trovac units are now using the 6.6" motor(s) which have better performance and lifespan (approaching the 8.4)...not sure if/which CanaVac...

Extremely Old Hoover, searching for details.

Saw this on Reddit! You are in the right place here. It appears that someone removed the original rotating brush and installed a straight brush driven by a pulley and crank so that it would oscillate (like the Rug Doctor "vibrating brush"). You can see the streaks of dirt in the housing left...
