Yes, I would agree with using a penetrating lubricant as your next step. And whether you use WD-40, Liquid Wrench, Blaster, or another type, be sure to give it some time to soak in before you attempt to dislodge it. You might want to spray it and wait at least twice before you attempt removal...

I'm thinking it would more likely be dust from sanding drywall compound. It is an extremely fine dust, and although the compound turns white as it dries, mixing with dust in the bag of a vacuum would tend to turn it a little gray. I would say proceed with your project and don't worry about it. Jeff
