    Vacuum Ghost Stories

I don't have any ghost stories involving a vacuum either but I do HVAC which requires A LOT of time up in attics. Normally there's nothing stored up in there in the newer homes (because of the impracticality that trusses create for usable storage) but in older houses, things are almost always up...

    Sightings today

I never went to thrift stores... ...because of my OCD (germaphobe tendencies) and the fact that even if I wasn't a germaphobe, I always assumed that there was never anything there I'd like, as the small appliances section mirrors that of a Walmart and the thrift stores in my area never have any...

Could anybody tell me about my JCPenney-branded Hoover Convertible?

Bon Ami... I haven't tried that. I'm always open to trying new cleaning supplies. I will have to pick that up! I usually use generic Dawn dish soap, Fabuloso or Simple Green for the cleaning and Lysol liquid cleaner for sanitizing (but my wife, who is an RN, managed to get a hold of a couple...

    Sightings today

I have a Sentria and an Avalir... Since they are basically the same machine, I slightly prefer the looks of the Avalir. I think that I will give the Sentria away to someone who will appreciate it to make room for the eventual DS50/DS80/500 series Kirby, if I find one. Failing that, I'll either...

    Sightings today

I told myself to KEEP OUT of thrift stores... ...but relapsed when I was out getting a new garden hose (since I hit it with the weedwacker by accident after a mild panic over a couple of bees swarming around me, which I'm allergic to). Since Home Depot was in close proximity to Goodwill, I...

    Hoover Convertible motor gaskets...

The hood is plastic. The base is cast aluminum, which is nice, and it kind of makes me wish that my 2016 Sanitaire SC886 was outfitted with an aluminum base rather than one out of plastic. I'm not sure which kind of plastic the hood is made out of, but I'm assuming that it's high impact ABS...

    Hoover Convertible motor gaskets...

So I have my 1974 JCPenney (Hoover Convertible) torn apart for a cleanup/service and the motor gasket is dry rotted with evidence of dust leakage around the perimeter of the base. I searched for new gaskets on Amazon, eBay and eVacuumStore and have come up short. I would use air duct sealant...

    Why I like Dyson

@madman, you actually took the condenser with you when you moved? That's unheard of! Heck, most people think removing a dishwasher and taking it with them would be a big task to undertake so they leave it there. Condensers would be totally off the table for them. Did you remove it yourself or...

    Why I like Dyson

Wow, a lot of passion on both sides! It's no different in anything else. Cars, computers, and even HVAC, where a lot of guys are pro-Carrier, pro-Trane/American Standard (that would be me right here, even though I work in a Carrier shop, lol), pro-Rheem and so on. The common denominator in HVAC...

Deep in the bowels of the church...

The furnace room of my childhood church had two Lennox Pulse furnaces. It was always cool to hear them running when walking down the hall to Sunday school.

Can't figure Royal Metal uprights out

I hope my Royal 884 outlasts me... I'm only 25, I'm sure it will but I would be heartbroken if it conked out with no way to fix it. I couldn't bear the thought of trashing it even though I only paid $10 for it at a thrift store. When I bought it, I actually walked away from it, thinking that...

    Why I like Dyson

My wife seem enamored with her new Ball Animal 2 (or whatever it's called, I don't know Dyson lingo all that well). Her birthday was on the 15th so after we came home from dinner, I had the box waiting in the foyer. At first, she was like "another vacuum, Kyle? Seriously? What is wrong with...

Could anybody tell me about my JCPenney-branded Hoover Convertible?

Wow...1974... Cool! That would make it the oldest machine in my collection so far, it's 20 years older than I am! I was thinking that this was maybe 1978-1984 as a wild guess. As far as the bearings go, the motor does sound good but I was thinking about replacing them due to age. If they are...

Could anybody tell me about my JCPenney-branded Hoover Convertible?

Oh, here are my two other projects, coming to a close... Just have to do a final polish, a little bit of final assembly and wait for the bags to dry...

Could anybody tell me about my JCPenney-branded Hoover Convertible?

Now that my two main projects are nearing an end (my thrift-store Kirby finds, an Avalir and a Heritage II Legend), it will soon be time for me to begin my third, which is to restore a JCPenney branded Hoover Convertible, so I have some questions. When was this thing made? It is my understanding...

    How to clean a Kirby

The very first thing I do is reassemble everything and put all non-electrical parts (head, trim pieces, em-tor, aluminum shell, fancase and motor base) into a plastic tub. I hose everything off until it is free of dust and debris. I pay special attention to the head and fancase, where I scrub...

What carpet cleaner do you use?

I use a Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3 It replaced a Hoover SpinScrub FH50150 which did a great job but didn't inspire confidence that it would last more than a couple of years. The brush turbine assembly broke twice. There is a bearing inside that will rust. While you could try to pry it open and...

    Why I dislike Dyson

@broomvac Ah, so that settles it. For some reason, I always thought of the ball machines as Cinetics, probably because of their ability to twist and turn corners and so I assumed "Cinetic" = a play on the word kinetic. I am not too familiar with Dyson nomenclature.

    Why I dislike Dyson

It's discontinued? This is what I bought (link below). It doesn't say anything about being discontinued on the info. I hope that after paying that much that it's not discontinued! And it's a little disconcerting to hear that these aren't that good. I went off of the reviews since I am...
