Actually, I believe the filters should be replaced every 5 years. Besides, it probably wouldn't hurt to have the filter replaced.

There are two types of filters the Eureka can take. One is a triangle shaped filter that fits in the top of the dust cup, and the other is a rectangular filter that slides into the back of the dust cup.

I believe the age is based on the 1st 4 digits of the serial number. For example, my Hoover Power Drive's serial number starts with 0797, so the vacuum would have been made in July 1997, or 7/97.
