A few weeks ago I couldnt belive my luck. I found this awesome vacuum. It was about a 100 km from me but it was a holiday so off we set. I have a particular fondness of 70,s. I have built up a good collection of these peculiar machines. For one they were years ahead of the rest of the world...

As for the Sylvia Let's see the actual story You bought a concept one here in Cape Town, I restored it at no cost to you, when it came time for it to be collected your parents were visiting about 100 km from Cape Town and I you wanted them to fetch on a Friday. Despite me saying that I...

Van Riebeeck ( bylock) floor polisher Restoration

I forgot to add, I kept the switch on on the handle that had been fitted by the previous owner. Although not original I did think it looked cool and added some personal history to the machine.. and it worked which the original one did not, I have two of these and know of another 5 ? Still in...

Van Riebeeck ( bylock) floor polisher Restoration

Madman HI Yea I checked with the manufacturer and you must not sand it at all after application, but apparently you can clearcoat it. I will be going over it again shortly and will post pics. In the mean time here are more pics of it going back together

Van Riebeeck ( bylock) floor polisher Restoration

I used Rustoleum chrome spray and it came out really nicely, I however made a mistake though, always polish up the paintwork after it has dried and this did not take kindly to that, it lost some of its shine and Unfortunately I ran out of the paint so I will need to redo it again.

    Columbus Sylvia and attachemts

I think the cord shorted out at some stage and someone cut it off. It normally has a long cord on it. I simply fitted a new cord. It can take paper bags but I think allot of people used it without. This machine was sold in the Usa under the Regina brand but with a different hood

    Columbus Sylvia and attachemts

All hooked up, the only issue is the machine is very light and you can easily tip the machine over when just moving the hose slightly

    Columbus Sylvia and attachemts

Their are two base plate covers that clip over the base plate of the machine, one is obviously for hard floor vacuuming as it has a felt strip( that fell off and I forgot to add it back for the pic ) it also fearures the lever to activate the higher wattage button like the converter plate. The...

The attachments are new, the extention tubes are very long, longer than any I have found before, much longer than any on modern day vacuums that still use two separate tubes. The hose is also very long for a upright vacuum, especially a budget one like this one

The motor was stripped, new 608 bearings fitted. You cant get the belts for these machines anymore so I used the large belt from a dyson dc14 clutch. Worked a treat

    Columbus Sylvia and attachemts

So this is the second machine I got from the same lady, this one a upright with brand new attachments. The base was severely yellowed and the fan mad a noise when it ran, the bearings were also shot. The cord too was a little short for my liking :)
