The plastic strips seen on many Royal brushrolls are not used for brush replacement. Those strips are called Brush Stiffeners and act like beater bars for vibrating the carpet.    When the brushes are worn out, you need to replace the entire brushroll.

Fan damage... Tacks, paper clips and even a wooden pencil will not harm the robust metal fan in a metal Royal upright. I know because I own one. Beware that some larger objects such as coins may cause  damage to the fan so one should always be on the lookout for those larger objects.

@vacuumdevil:   It's obvious (and it's easy to tell) that you know I've been right all along about Royal and other Direct Air vacs are the best way to go for commercial cleaning. You just don't want to admit it because you're a sore loser.

Ben,   I only have one Royal, the 8300. I do not remove the belt from the motor pulley shaft while not in use and I have found the belt easily lasts me a year or more. I typically use my Royal once or twice a month.   ~Stan

If you are going to run a cleaning business, you really need a machine that will stand up to heavy use for a long period of time with only basic maintenance like belt and brushroll.   You need something like this:

A Real Royal... Here is a picture of a Real Royal metal upright. This is the Royal Everlast 8300 made in 2008.    

I have also heard of the front wheels squeaking on some Kirby's. If that's the case, a little 3-in-One oil should take care of the problem.
