    What is the fix for…

Just to follow up… …I reused the old end cap with the spring and shimmed it. This seemed to tighten up that side of the brushroll. However, I then discovered that there was a fair amount of play on the other side, which I resolved by shimming the grooves in the base for a tighter fit. Despite...

    What is the fix for…

Yes, there was some slack to begin with. The slots are definitely significantly worn out. The new brushroll does not have the spring on the left end cap like the original one would have had (I am thinking I might reuse the original cap). Thank you for the pics; originally I stuck several pieces...

    What is the fix for…

***UPDATE*** I just recieved a NOS OEM Hoover brushroll and installed it. The machine is a LITTLE quieter but definitely not anything close to a purr. @desiredname: I tried shimming the groove where the notched end cap goes with masking tape. Not sure if this is what you did with your machine...

Advice Regarding CWP Brush Roll and Hoover Convertible

I know I am not directly answering your question but… …@floor-a-matic: Do you know (or perhaps anyone else) of any sites that carry the genuine hoover brushroll like the one in the last picture? I am having difficulty finding one; I even tried ordering what I expected to be an OEM part only to...

PLEASE HELP with a Hoover 66!!

I would put a fair price for this unit in the $50-$75 range.

Where to find OEM Hoover agitator?

Hello collectors, Does anyone know of any sites that sell the genuine Hoover 4 bristle brushroll for a Convertible? I recently tried ordering one (or so I thought) off of eBay only to receive a CWP (which I returned), even after the seller claimed that it would be an OEM part in response to my...

    What Hoover vacuums are rare?

In addition to that light blue Convertible… …some other rare US Convertibles include the 714 (1967 or '68), promo 706 ('69-'71), and 1032 (early 70s, not sure of exact year). I also believe that there were some gold U4001s with a groovy bag pattern, and, since I own one like this myself, some...

Hoover Convertible Hood Design - 1970's One Piece

The narrower headlight style hood was used on the very last Convertible ever made, the U4497-900 from around 1990 (which I own). I believed the flatter style was discontinued in the early '80s.

Hoover Convertible Hood Design - 1970's One Piece

The full hood, aka "ranger hood" models were both introduced as part of the same lineup from 1973-75, which featured the U4003, U4005, U4007 and U4009.

    Sound of a Sweeper?

@icee: If you like that growly tone, then a Convertible is just the cleaner for you! I had also used an Electrolux 1205 once before and loved the sound of it, too.

    So...Daily Drivers? (pre 1995)

Hoover Convertibles, of course! Out of my entire collection, five Convertibles get used the most for carpet cleaning; models 719, 1020, U4089, U4367, and U4497-900, the latter three of which have CWP brushrolls. I also use HEPA filter top-fill bags in the U4367 and U4497-900 since they are...

a question about my hoover upright

If this appeals to you, a Hoover Constellation floats on a bed of air, even easier than wheels! They are just as colorful as the Convertibles.

    Sound of a Sweeper?

I have to agree with @gottahaveahoove. Those metal-based, pre-mid-70's Convertibles; once the motor and brushroll bearings are lubricated, they have a really nice sound. They could probably put a baby to sleep! I also like the sound of the late 70's 4.7 amp Convertibles (ex. Convertible Elite...

a question about my hoover upright

Is the bag full, perhaps? I find that, on the older bottom-fill C-bag models, the tool airflow decreases significantly when the bag is close to full, just because of the design of these machines. BTW, just curious, what model do you have?

    Looking for advice on repainting

I ordered a new handle grip for a Hoover Convertible and I will need to paint it a different color. How should I go about doing this as far as prep work and paint selection are concerned?

    What is the fix for…

Thanks for the tips! Upon further investigation, I noticed a slight bit of play when moving the end caps back and forth in the brushroll. I also noticed wear marks on each end of the long rod, right about where it slides into the bearing. I am considering rebuilding the brushroll with new...

    What is the fix for…

@desiredname Yes, on one of the machines the end cap was slightly loose to begin with, but I did try JB Weld and I once even took another end cap and ground down the rounded edges so I could shove it in there. It quieted down for a while but then gradually got louder again. What did you use for...

    What is the fix for…

The serviceman (who is not a vintage Hoover expert by any means) never actually bent it. I've tried using other rods and still have had the same problem. Is there a way to straighten it out? Perhaps I have been a bit unlucky and had several bent rods?? In addition, the guy also said that the...

    What is the fix for…

…a Hoover Convertible brushroll that makes a loud rattling sound? The last two Convertibles I aquired (older metal-based models) both had this problem. I had replaced the brushroll bearings but to no avail. The serviceman at the vacuum cleaner store that I buy parts from has said that the long...

    Fixing a Cracked Convertible Base?

Ahh, Yes!! VERY common problem with the newer plastic-based Convertibles! I own two myself and both have the same problem! So far, I have had the best success with hot glue and rubber cement. Hope this helps!
