Gasket material on Hoover bottom plate

Thanks, I applied some 24-hour-cure multi purpose silicone after cleaning the residue with a wire brush. I'll see what happens.

Gasket material on Hoover bottom plate

I need to restore the gasket material that seals the metal bottom plate to the nozzle of an older Convertible as it is starting to come off. What are some products I should try?

Hoover RS Convertible U4597 Agitator Oddity

@2011hoover700: Unfortunately I do not have any Convertible tool sets so I cannot post a video.

Hoover RS Convertible U4597 Agitator Oddity

As for your brushrolls, the ones without the beater bars were likely replacements, but still made by Hoover, probably for the commercial machines. I believe all Convertibles had beater bars but I am not entirely certain.

Hoover RS Convertible U4597 Agitator Oddity

Later convertibles, like yours… …had a front-mounted converter that attached to the bottom plate covering the brushroll. Here is a demonstration of the later setup. This can also be accomplished with the cleaner running. http://https//www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNCvRc-Ky10

Hoover RS Convertible U4597 Agitator Oddity

In 1957, the first Convertible rolled off the line equipped with a receptacle at the rear of the base, in which an attachment converter at the end of the hose could be inserted without any disassembly or even shutting the cleaner off. Models with two speed motors had an additional mechanism to...

Hoover RS Convertible U4597 Agitator Oddity

The secret behind the CONVERTIBLE… …is that it was Hoover's first effort to design a fast, easy, no-tools method of converting an upright cleaner to an above floor cleaning machine. Prior to the Convertible, conversion to attachments was a multi-step process that involved replacing one piece...

    Hoover Convertible U4127?

If I'm not mistaken, the plastic-based U4103 was made primarily in the early '80s. I did see a video of a (supposedly) 1977 Convertible Estate U4103, which had a metal base.

    Hoover Convertible U4127?

You are correct. That model along with the U4119 (I believe) were the first plastic convertibles and were introduced in the late '70s.

    Convertible Maintenance Questions

Where in particular are they most readily available online? I've seen few listings on Amazon for bulk quantities but not much. I think I will probably end up drilling a hole and plugging it up somehow with a plastic plug or cap.

Odd Hoover Convertible Model 33 motor

I think I get the idea. Do you (could I, perhaps) use the old Hoover bearing (I plan to replace it), drill a hole in it, and just stick the stone in the small gap between the commutator and the plastic housing around? A picture would definitely help if possible. As mentioned in my other...

Odd Hoover Convertible Model 33 motor

My convertible is arcing considerably, so I and several other members feel this this process would be necessary. This would be my first time using a commutator stone, so safety tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Convertible Maintenance Questions

Check out the first picture in this thread. What do you think of this? http://www.vacuumland.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?18966__0#start_18966.383876

Odd Hoover Convertible Model 33 motor

I think I have an explanation! I suspect the owner of this unit drilled the hole to insert a commutator stone to seat the new brushes. Check out my thread, the last couple of posts in which the use of commutator stones was discussed. http://www.vacuumland.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?35654_37

    Convertible Maintenance Questions

Commutator stones would indeed be tricky. It looks like the only way to do this would be to run the motor with only 1 brush. My only other option would be to connect a drill to the armature and run that, as I had done seating the brushes.

    Convertible Maintenance Questions

Here's another update: I replaced the top motor bearing temporarily with a known good used one and lubricated it. The motor is even noisier now. It sounds like a sick cow. While running, I turned the lights off in the room to look at the sparks on the brushes. One brush is shooting sparks like...

    Vintage Carpet Extractors

@ultralux88: Thanks for showing. That would definitely be too big of a machine for my needs! I bet it sure can do some serious cleaning though. I had seen what looked like commercial tank style machines on Google images so I wanted to know if I was looking at the right units. I have seen home...

    Vintage Carpet Extractors

I should check them out. Could you post a picture of your machine so I could get an idea of what to look for? How well would these machines work compare to a Kirby or Electrolux shampooer? I have come across some on eBay and I am curious. I would only be cleaning my carpets at home, so I don't...

Interesting. The Rug Doctor I looked at is the smaller red upright, not the rental style Mighty Pro or Mighty Pro X3.

    Convertible Maintenance Questions

I take it that I need to lubricate the new bearing before installing. Is that correct? Once again, thanks for all your help.
