Royal Metal Vacuums - New, Used, or Decades Old Used?

Not A Collector? Howdy Don, I'm not a collector either. It would be nice to own a few vacuums. Maybe the best candidate from each manufacturer. But, they would take up more space than our little ranch can hold. We're bursting at the seams already, just with the coats & linens that take up...

How do you unscrew a screw that wont budge

If I'm Looking At The Right Screw(s) If you have clearance around the head of the screw, you can use a Dremel tool and small grinding wheel to grind flats on the sides of the screw. From there, you can use pliers or "Vise Grips" to spin it out.

How does one polish up the Kirby vacuum body

Don't Buy Harbor Freight Aluminum Polishing Kit I bought Harbor Freight's #98707. Figured the small wheels and bobs could get into tight areas. Well, maybe they can, but they can't polish anything at their rated RPM, which is 2,800 for the wheels, and 20,000 for the bobs. The bobs are kind...

Royal Metal Vacuums - New, Used, or Decades Old Used?

Quest For Perfection The part you need for the height adjust would probably be the Adjuster Release (1133715000) for $6.52 at ereplacementparts.com. Grab a $.50 Rod spring (1003009000) while you're at it. Nothing wrong with the "A" style bags. They're plentiful in the F&G version. Can be had...

Just Rounded Out My Dynamic Duo

Yikes, I Couldn't Do That! If I tried to keep all these vacs, you'd never hear from me again... because, my wife would kill me! Honestly Tolivac, if you had to pick just one upright to live with (and use a canister for tools), which would it be?

Just Rounded Out My Dynamic Duo

Don't Sell Em? I'm keeping my Model 9700. The 4008 goes on Ebay pretty soon. Just finished polishing the bell housing. Have a few scratches on the motor housing to sand and buff, and it will be ready to go. I have to do the work when my wife isn't around. She doesn't even realize the 4008...

Just Rounded Out My Dynamic Duo

Royal Metal Upright Fur Fighter Hey Tolivac, That's funny. I can clean that particular rug in under a minute with the Royals. Not exaggerating. Takes a full minute if I use the Model 880, which has been sold. That shot was taken when all I had was a Sharp by-pass. You're right, it couldn't...

For Guido and others who need a inexpensive buffing machine

Great MacGyver! How many RPMs does that puppy spin? Does it bog much under load? Jeebus, that wheel is sick!

Just Rounded Out My Dynamic Duo

English Springer Spaniel Fur Our furry son, Murphy, is a fur machine. A few months ago he was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and his fur had thinned a lot. He's been on meds since, and his fur has filled back in amazingly. Not sure if that caused his old fur to come out more, or what, but...

Just Rounded Out My Dynamic Duo

Storage Issue Good point Tolivac. That's yet another factor in the great compromise. Weighing cost, vs speed, vs weight, vs noise, vs maintenance, vs consumables, vs end result, vs... aesthetics? Yeah, even the appearance seems to be a factor for many consumers. Everyone has different...

Just Rounded Out My Dynamic Duo

Hideous Blue Bomb Is History Mini Cree is installed and what a difference! So, my dynamic vacuuming duo is complete. My Bunton 48" walk behind mower is to my Royal 9700, as my Stihl string trimmer is to my Electrolux EL6986A. They all excel at the task they were designed for. Some people...

1980-1995 Royal (All-Metal) Upright Model Chart

Last Model 9700 Picture Another feature that has nothing to do with function, is the color. I liked the deep red used on the Kirby's in the 60's. Probably why I prefer Burgundy on the full featured Royals. Otherwise, the powder blue is one of the prettiest colors, in my opinion. The royal...

1980-1995 Royal (All-Metal) Upright Model Chart

Favorite Feature One option that would be worth paying a few bucks for, is the infinitely variable, foot adjuster. Not sure of the proper name for it, but I love it!

Polished Aluminum! That arguably gaudy wheel issue is just one detail on an otherwise beautiful piece of equipment. And, it's the chrome trim and polished aluminum housings that really... shine!

1980-1995 Royal (All-Metal) Upright Model Chart

Wheel Covers? Of course the thing that stands out on this model, is the chrome wheel covers. Yeah, wheel covers on a vacuum! Not exactly a form follows function kind of option, eh? In my opinion, it boarders on gaudy, and that's not the worst of it. The wheels themselves are made of a...

1980-1995 Royal (All-Metal) Upright Model Chart

Newly Acquired Model 9700 Thanks to Ben's detailed list, I knew what models to seek, and I was able to finally acquire a 1994 Model 9700. Unlike Kirby, Royal offered many configurations each year, ranging from basic household units, to beefy commercial or loaded with options machines. This...

1980-1995 Royal (All-Metal) Upright Model Chart

Built Like A Tank, Light As A Feather, Works Like A Horse! I'm a form follows function kind of guy, but these Royals and 60's Kirby's vacuums have an iconic Americana look to them. Rugged, purpose built, machines, perfected over time. The polished aluminum housings are icing on the cake!

    Royal Model 880 Acquisition

Back Together I placed my order from Vac Parts Warehouse on the 28th by phone, because the secure part of the site wasn't working. I was told the nozzle cover was in stock, and told it would ship right away. Well, just got confirmation it went in the mail only last night! This rookie kid got...

    Royal Model 880 Acquisition

Wow, It's Here Already! I have a new respect for USPS Parcel Select. Won auction on 28th, in my hands from California on the 30th! And, it's going to be "The One". It's even got wheel covers, that cinches it! Thanks again for compiling that "ROYAL METAL UPRIGHT PRODUCTION LIST", Ben. Never...

How does one polish up the Kirby vacuum body

Love Aluminum That picture above shows a side of the nozzle that had really deep scratches and gouges. I used a file followed by progressively finer sandpaper. If the last thing to touch it is a medium Scotch Brite, the cutting compound can blend that super smooth. Mirror finish produced by...
