Hi all... One of my earliest vacuum memories is using our Sunbeam "hatbox" canister vacuum. It was off-white with light brown trim and had a gentle "purr" when it was on. Update Hey all...I did take my Hoover to the service center just to make sure it's working correctly. Everything checked out okay -- it just seems to leave things a little wetter than I would like. I'm not ready to plop down the $700 for a new Rug Doctor, so I think I'll rent one for the day...

thank you Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I've had two Hoover steam vacs now...the first worked okay, but the newer one just doesn't seem to be picking up as much water as I'd like it to. I'll try the Rug Doctor by renting a machine to see how it does.

I have owned two Dysons and have given one away to a friend and will gladly part with the other. I love the way they empty -- the best of the bagless lot. But they don't seem to be great for my carpet. I hope that the new American version of both the upright and the canister will be better...
