    When Armatures Attack

Just finished the 513 this morning. Looks pretty sharp even with the tan trim. And best of all, it's spider free!

    The Hoover 450 Saga

To re-wire the handle on these, you first need to unplug the handle from the base. The you can unscrew the plug bits at the end, then unscrew the switch plate and pull all of the wiring out of the handle. At that point, you can replace all of the wiring with new stuff. One you have the switch...

    When Armatures Attack

James, It won't be anything spectacular, it was factory rebuilt in 1995, so of course it has been stripped of all its original trim and replaced with tan blahness. It was however, the cleanest field coil I've seen to date, minus the abomination lurking within. I plan on using it as my "daily...

    When Armatures Attack

I needed a break from working on my Hoover 725 last night, so I pulled a Kirby 513 off of my "to do" shelf and quickly dismembered it to begin cleaning. When I pulled the armature out, I discovered a bit of a surprise. What appeared to be a member of the widow family had made a little nest in...

    Hoover "Coffee Can" Help

I got the motor all reassembled last night. However, the brushes are arcing excessively against the commutator (excessive is an understatement). I thought I had put them back in their original holders and orientation, but maybe I got them mixed up. I just ordered some cleaning/seating stones and...

    Hoover "Coffee Can" Help

Of course! It's a 725. I was able to get the motor housing polished and the field cleaned last night. Tonight will be bearings and re-assembling the motor.

    Hoover 725 Bag

I'm close to being done with my 725 now that it finally came apart, which brings me to the subject of bags. Is anyone still making bags for this style machine? The one that came on it is pretty tatty (it's an old replacement, anyway). Even better if someone has an extra original they aren't...

    Hoover "Coffee Can" Help

Well, exactly 1 month of soaking in WD-40 finally paid off! Belt pully screw finally broke loose and I was able to remove everything to clean and lubricate. It was really rusted on... I'll be hoovering in no time now!

I think this one nearly made the FedEx man keel over.

Glad everything made it! At least I didn't have to worry about that box getting "misplaced" like the handle to my Hoover 450. ;-)

    Hoover 450 Brush Strips

I will take some later and post them. I had the strips out last night and went to install what I thought were 450 strips that I had in my parts but I think they are for a 700 or similar. The ones on eBay being sold by bmxgary are not 450 strips despite the fact that he has them listed as such...

    The Hoover 450 Saga

I recently purchased Sean's Hoover 450 (which has been wonderfully cleaned, polished, and serviced by Will). He had intended on listing it on eBay, but I made him an offer he couldn't refuse! Anyway, after the Mini-Meet at Sean's house, he carefully packaged everything up, putting the handle in...

1977 Kirby Classic III Repair - Hard Dirt Found!

I try not to think of the nastiness that I'm touching (and breathing) when cleaning out a machine after aquisition. Somehow the bags are always full, even stuff I buy on eBay. You couldn't take a second to EMPTY it? Ugh.

1977 Kirby Classic III Repair - Hard Dirt Found!

That's a pretty big hunk of metal, they must have entered the fan just at the right moment to slip between the blades and whip around into the bag. Usually one isn't so lucky, and the fan just explodes.
