vacuum enthusiasts: what's your choice of washer and dryer?

The sealed tub issue is one reason why I quickly eliminated Zanussi and AEG amongst others from my list of potential choices. Should the tub, drum, bearings, seals or spider fail, I would at least like to be given the choice as to whether or not to replace them individually, rather than having...

vacuum enthusiasts: what's your choice of washer and dryer?

For the price paid I'm very pleased with it, you can easily spend a lot more on something worse. I'm talking your £500 Hoovers and £800 Samsungs here. For that kind of money, it would make more sense to seek out a good deal on a basic Miele instead. There was nothing wrong with the Hotpoint WM...

vacuum enthusiasts: what's your choice of washer and dryer?

My cousin lives in a terrace and has exactly the same issue. She too hangs things to dry on a clothes horse, but a dryer is still necessary for larger things like towels and bed linen. At least with older housing, there is usually enough space somewhere you can shoehorn a dryer in. I've seen...

    Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners

Sounds like you've got a good one there Benny, someone who obviously sees cleaning as a "proper" job and has built up enough of a reputation to actually create demand for their services. Word of mouth recommendations are always the best form of advertising, whatever line of business you're in...

Bosch Logixx 8 WAS28461GB, which I've had for going on two years now without any problems, touch wood. At the time Bosch were running a £100 cash back promotion, which effectively brought the price of the machine down to £399. I thought that was a good deal, seeing as full retail elsewhere was...

    Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners

Sebofan, Again, I absolutely agree. There is this notion that working a cleaning job means just randomly flicking a duster and doing a bit of vacuuming while eavesdropping on the client's conversations in the next room. If you were to go solely by what was portrayed on TV, that would indeed be...

    Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners

VR, Re: post 259196, I absolutely agree with you. Twice I've been made redundant in the past 10 years, but on both occasions, claiming dole was not an option. Having paid contributions all my working life I was perfectly entitled to sign on, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. The...

    Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners

VR, Given the choice of working retail or cleaning for the same money, I know which I'd rather do. When cleaning you are generally left alone to get on with your work, and are rarely put in a position where you have to deal with with crazy people. The same cannot be said for retail.

    Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners

Trouble with the cleaning industry is that it isn't exciting, glamorous or sexy in any way, and therefore doesn't get a fraction of the recognition and respect it deserves. When you think about it, cleaners are absolutely essential; does anyone ever really stop to think what our workplaces...

    Looking for a cordless vacuum...

I too would suggest the DC59, which can accept all of Dyson's click-fit tools including the optional stretch hose. Works very well, but at full retail is incredibly overpriced for what it is. If you can find one at a price you're happy to pay, great, otherwise I'd be looking around at other options.

    Hoover Film From 1950

Geez, storage heaters... better than no heat at all, but that's all I can say about them. They do require regular tending, in that you need to anticipate the following day's weather and adjust the heat input accordingly. Get it wrong and you'll either run out of stored heat, or waste energy for...

EU Reducing Energy on Vacuums Update

Yep, turbo brushes usually have a true relief valve, in the form of either a slider or rotary vent. Allows you to have enough airflow going through the turbine to drive the brushes at a sufficient speed, while relieving some of the suction so the head doesn't bog down into the carpet. On the...

My New Cream and Brown Henry

The reason they're rare now is because they were only made for a few years, and that was some 20 odd years ago. Red, on the other hand, has always been the default Henry colour. It was available from day one of production, through to present times, so it stands to reason there will be more...

    Dyson dc07 Full Gear

I seem to recall that was the reason for the double lock. When the cleaner is picked up by the handle at the top of the bin, it prevents the user inadvertently thumbing the cyclone release button and sending the rest of the machine crashing down onto the floor, or worse.

EU Reducing Energy on Vacuums Update

Ah, I see what you mean - looking back at what I wrote, it could have been taken either way. What I was getting at is that the new "eco" floor heads (e.g. Miele AirTeq and the Numatic one for 800 watt machines) are designed to focus all of the available airflow into the carpet, so as to make...

    1992 Electrolux Airstream 1000 Z1490

Another thing to remember is that, while there are still a fair few of these older cleaners in general use, there comes a point when the owners will no longer wish to sink too much money into them. Once a cleaner reaches 15 or 20 years old, it has for all intents and purposes already exceeded...

EU Reducing Energy on Vacuums Update

VR, I think the biggest change in motors will simply be a shift away from the cheapened single fan units many companies use now, back to twin fans. Nothing new, nothing to redesign, just a return to what was commonplace 20 odd years ago. Dyson will most likely press on with their digital motor...

EU Reducing Energy on Vacuums Update

I think there will be very little redesigning of anything going on when this hits. More likely than not, certain manufacturers will simply sub a 2000+ watt motor for a 1000 watt one, colour the vac green and slap the word "eco" on the outside. Greenwashing at its best.

My New Cream and Brown Henry

Beige/brown was definitely not a limited edition, just another colour choice at the time (much like the later blue, yellow and green options). How easy the alternative colours were to get hold of depended on the dealer, though. Some would offer the full range, others saw no point and would just...

    Show us... Your coffee maker

This is my coffee brewer of choice, a Technivorm K741. It's old fashioned and lacks some modern features such as auto shut-off and drip stop, and that's exactly why I bought it. I specifically didn't want something cheap and plasticky, with bits to go wrong and lots of little gubbins to clean...
