    Hoover Model 707 - Part 3

Please see my first two posts regarding the saga with this Model 707. In short, the motor buzzes, but does not turn. I've gotten several suggestions (i.e., carbon brushes, bearings, whole new motor, etc.). The brushes are about 1/2-inch long; shorter than they should be, but not worn to a nub...

Hoover Model 707 - The Continuing Saga

Thanks for the advice... @super-sweeper - I did disconnect the brush roller and it didn't make a difference. Also, I don't have a digital camera. Maybe I can borrow one. @ornery - Thanks for the advice. I can check for play in the belt pulley and field coil. Although I was hoping to fix this...

Hoover Model 707 - The Continuing Saga

For those who haven't read about this before, the motor will hum/buzz, but does not turn. I've received various diagnostic theories - from worn carbon brushes to bearings needing to be re-packed. Some were also nice enough to provide links to sites where I can purchase the correct part (if I...

Hoover Model 707 Motor Hums, But Doesn't Turn

Well, I reassembled the motor and turned on the vacuum. Based on what I'm hearing, I would have to say that it is more of a "buzz" than a "hum". So, does this then point back to the carbon brushes?

Hoover Model 707 Motor Hums, But Doesn't Turn

Thanks for the additional advice. I will have to reassemble the motor to determine if the motor is humming or actually buzzing - as one person noted there is a difference. As far as the armature is concerned, I can spin it by hand, but it does not spin freely or easily.

Hoover Model 707 Motor Hums, But Doesn't Turn

Thanks to those who offered advice. As a follow-up, I removed both carbon brushes and found them each to be about 1/2-inch long. I'm not sure how long they are when new, but replacing them probably can't hurt. If replacing them doesn't correct the problem, I'll be back...

Hoover Model 707 Motor Hums, But Doesn't Turn

Thank you for the response. About all I can see on the picture you provided are the springs - and a little bit (the brush?) on the end. The ones I am dealing with do NOT look like your picture. They are certainly much longer. If I can get hold of a digital camera, I will try to take a picture...

Hoover Model 707 Motor Hums, But Doesn't Turn

Since it was my first post, I inadvertently posted this within another thread instead of creating a new one. Despite that, some people there were nice enough to respond. I also wanted to post it here to get some additional advice. As noted in the title, the vacuum motor hums, but doesn't turn...

Hoover Convertible Model 707, newest restoration!

Hoover Model 707 Motor Hums, But Doesn't Turn Thank you for your response and advice. I do know how to access the carbon brushes in the motor. I actually removed them when I was looking for obstructions in the motor. Since I wasn't aware that the brushes could be causing the problem, I...

Hoover Convertible Model 707, newest restoration!

Hoover Model 707 Motor Hums, But Doesn't Turn I just joined today, so please forgive me if I am not posting in the correct location. I disassembled the vacuum and checked for obstructions - none were found. I reassembled it and it ran fine; but only for several minutes. After that, it was back...
