    Ok thanks everyone. As luxlife suggested the axle spring is missing. It took me a while to realize the spring goes on the bottom and doesn't need the hood removed for access.

    Oops, I missed the spring comment, thanks luxlife. Does anyone know how the hood is held on? I see some models have springs and others have two screws.

    Thanks Les. What part are you referring to when you say "If you don't have it attached correctly?" Upward pressure on the wheels seems to lock the slider in place. I can try to open it up this weekend to see what is going on. I had a cheap hoover from Walmart that self destructed after a few...
